Epiphone Tackles Custom Les Paul Design

Since its grand entrance in the early 1950s, the Les Paul Custom's iconic visual design and sonic versatility have touched the hearts of countless high-profile musicians. Broken down to its finest components, the Epiphone Les Paul Custom's thoughtful mahogany body construction and maple top bear the sonic and visual resemblance of its contemporaries while favoring several period-correct appointments to match the standard of its mid-century roots. Gibson's USA-series humbuckers positioned in the neck and bridge cater to several sonic possibilities, from clean rhythm keeping to devious hot-rodded squeals and everywhere in between. Topped off with its proprietary Tune-o-matic bridge, stopbar tailpiece, and an assemblage of "Tuxedo"-inspired appointments, the Epiphone Les Paul Custom harbors the leverage of Gibson's most iconic 6-string design at an approachable value.

A tribute to classic Gibson design

Sweetwater guitarists have deduced that the historic Les Paul design bears three crucial hallmarks: playability, comfort, and tone. The Epiphone Les Paul Custom's solid maple and mahogany body represents the original model's time-tested tonewood design, developing bold sonics with excellent control and natural sustain. On the neck, the Les Paul Custom's ebony fretboard carries 22 frets at a 24.75-inch scale length, offering a modern playing field with the exceptional navigability that its ancestor was known for. It all comes down to a delicate gloss body finish on top of the Les Paul's classic, time-honored shape, offering a bounty of comfort in both stage and studio playing situations.

Genuine Gibson humbucker voicing

Intentions to shred crunchy leads and keep clean rhythms can easily be made with the Les Paul Custom's Gibson humbucker combo. With a Gibson USA 498T humbucker in the bridge position, finding the right balance of upper midrange squeal and amplified articulation is a cinch. Likewise, the guitar's Gibson USA 490R in the neck delivers powerful rhythm tone with plenty of room for midrange tonal exploration. Together, the 498T and 490R form an excellent humbucker bond that's attuned to prevent feedback at high levels, making it a perfect sonic option for plenty of genres and play styles.

Dressed to the nines in period-correct regalia

Adhering to its "Tuxedo" aesthetics, the Epiphone Les Paul Custom is fit to the gills with historically accurate appointments, including multi-ply body binding, a classic Gibson-style headstock, and a long tenon set neck joint. The guitar's Graph Tech nut and proprietary Epiphone Tune-o-matic bridge and tailpiece formulate a consistent playing field while keeping intonation remarkably stable via Grover Rotomatic tuning machines. In terms of its appearance, the Epiphone Les Paul Custom is a stunner, featuring a healthy mix of antique gold equipage and inlay visuals to keep its vintage roots well within bounds while performing as a true modern instrument.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:

Reviews

Hard to beat if you can’t afford a Gibson
I was blown away by this guitar. Had a setup done, got some filing done on the nut, through on some new strings. It plays like a dream, stays in tune. The pickups sound great. Gibson USA pickups. The MOP inlays have a nice chatoyance to them in the light. It looks great, feels great and sounds great through my 1964 Fender Bassman. Thank you, Michael Johnstone at Sweetwater for your help in finalizing this buy for me! And thank you to Trogly on YouTube for doing an in depth analysis of this instrument.

A new love
I'm an old time rocker who played in bands in the 80s. I'm also very much a Gibson snob. I've owned 2 mid 70s Gibson Les Pauls. One Gold top Deluxe and one 3 pick up Les Paul Custom. Sadly on both I had sold them for reasons of losing complete interest and unexpected circumstances. Today, 40 some years later I bought an Martin Acoustic but missed my electrics. I had seriously doubts about an Epiphone because of quality control and the "Made in China" thing. After some investigation and reviews I decided to swing it and buy one. Instantly after placing the order, sales engineer Chris McCown called me to ask about my playing style, string selection and gave me info on PLEK services. I immediately agreed and learned more about how the guitar is set up to my standards. Now one month later I'm happy to say I CANNOT notice a difference between a Gibson and an Epiphone IBC Les Paul. Familiarize yourself with the difference between a low end Epiphone and a IBG Epiphone. As far as the price, it's a no brainer yeah 5G was out of the question for me just getting back into VS 1299. Flawless in every way in looks and sounds. Thank you.
Epic
We all know that a Black Les Paul Custom is the best-looking guitar ever made, and Epiphone's version here is certainly no exception. It's stunning.
In my younger days, my Gibson LP Custom was my constant companion. I put thousands of miles on that guitar, until the day I, regretfully, sold it.
I've owned several Gibsons since then, and they are all great guitars in their own right, but none has been able to take me back to my beloved Black Custom.
This new Epiphone nailed it. I had previously ordered the new Epi '59 Lez Paul, but really didn't like the dull finish, and honestly didn't care for the Custombucker pickups. They're not a great choice for heavier music.
The 490/498 combo are my personal favorites, and they don't disappoint here. Heavy, light, clean and dirty are all right here.
My guitar arrived in great playing condition. I simply treated the fretboard and put on my my favorite strings.
And the looks? Good God, this thing is beautiful. The black finish is pure class. The Mother of Pearl inlays really pop against the Ebony fretboard, and the Open Book headstock is the ONLY suitable look for a Les Paul. It's staying in tune bet well, and plays like a good Les Paul Should.
The included hard shell case appears to be very well built also.
This is the best new guitar purchase I've made in many years, and I plan to put a lot of miles on this beauty.
If you're on the fence, just pull the trigger. You won't regret it.
