The Legendary Ludwig Black Beauty Snare
What goes into creating one of the most revered and recorded musical instruments of the past century? If you ask Ludwig, maker of the legendary Black Beauty snare drum, it all starts with the shell. Every Black Beauty USA snare is precision-formed from a single sheet of solid brass before being dressed in decadent black nickel plating. The result? Unmatched sensitivity and a rich, focused tone that cuts through a mix like nothing else. Today’s Black Beauty comes outfitted with 2.3mm triple-flanged steel hoops and Ludwig’s P88AC throw off for precision handling, no matter the genre of music. Heritage appointments include a Keystone badge and Imperial lugs for an instantly recognizable look. Ready to make your mark on your next session? Drummers at Sweetwater agree: the Black Beauty is one snare you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

The Ludwig legacy
Since 1909, Ludwig drums have enjoyed one of the proudest legacies in percussion and are a favorite of Sweetwater drummers for their warm, punchy sound. The world has heard them under the sticks of Cream's Ginger Baker, keeping the pulse behind Queen at Live Aid, and laying down the monstrous beat of Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks." But their biggest break came when Ringo Starr proudly played them on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, making Ludwig a household name for aspiring and superstar drummers alike.

What is a Ludwig Black Beauty made of?
The hallmark of the Black Beauty snare is its black nickel over brass (BNOB) shell, renowned for its extraordinary depth, beauty, and richness. Each shell starts as a flat slab of brass that’s precision-formed into the seamless, beaded design players know and love. Because brass can be difficult to work with, Ludwig entrusts the shell formation to a select few USA drum makers in small batches. For this reason, only a handful of Black Beauties are created each year — another factor that adds to their desirability.
What is the Black Beauty sound?
The Black Beauty’s sound is instantly recognizable. It’s that perfect blend of attack, tone, and harmonics many of us spend our careers chasing. Played wide open, the Black Beauty’s bloom and sustain are mythic. But throw a tea towel or a wallet on top, and the Black Beauty can hang with the most dynamic hands on the planet. Both in the room and under the scrutiny of close mics, there’s rarely a musical setting where the Ludwig Black Beauty doesn’t land on a short list of snares that can truly do it all.
