Seize Kontrol of Your Sound Like Never Before

Since the inception of the Kontrol smart keyboard controllers, Native Instruments has embarked on an uncompromising odyssey to bridge the physical and digital divides, seamlessly integrating their cutting-edge NKS technology with nuanced, tactile control that makes any Virtual Instrument feel as real as possible. With the Kontrol S Mk3 controllers, they’ve elevated the series to new heights of expressivity, available in 49-, 61-, and 88-key options and loaded with cutting-edge Fatar keybeds developed in collaboration with Native Instruments to ensure that the highly detailed polyphonic aftertouch captures every nuance of your sound. While the S49 and S61 feature semi-weighted keys, the S88 boasts one of the world’s first widely available hammer-action polyphonic aftertouch controllers, blending worlds of sound, form, and function like never before. You also get NKS 2 (Native Kontrol Standard 2), which provides a level of software integration you can't find anywhere else. Producers and keyboardists at Sweetwater are amazed by this keyboard’s comprehensive control, not just for expanding the DAW integration of its predecessors to go far beyond simple transport controls, but for its future-minded design via MIDI 2.0 compatibility and USB-C MIDI.

Mk3: an elevated expressive experience

With the Kontrol keyboard controllers, expressivity has never been more nuanced. Onboard polyphonic aftertouch provides detailed control of each note, letting you engage changes in pressure and velocity across chords to elicit evocative passages and progressions. A deeply customizable suite of modulation-wheel assignment options enables you to masterfully manipulate pitch, cutoff, vibrato, and virtually any additional parameter found within your plug-in of choice. If impressive flexibility with the modulation and pitch wheels wasn’t enough, you’ll find a dedicated Touch Strip nearby, facilitating a new dimension of uninterrupted expressivity. What’s more, because each keybed was developed in collaboration with Fatar, it captures not just the nuances of each manner of expression, but is fully calibrated for the extreme resolution of MIDI 2.0 and the creative possibilities that it affords on any manner of instrument or control.

Komplete integration, designed for the future

The face-lifted Kontrol keyboard’s interface maximizes depth of control while streamlining the user experience with excellent ergonomics. A rugged, durable housing comprises CNC-machined anodized aluminum that’s been bead blasted for a frame that’s as sturdy as it is aesthetically satisfying. Its vivid, full-color display enables detailed control of any NKS instrument. At the same time, its eight knobs, 4D encoder, and versatile soft switches can be tailored for virtually any performance, composition, or arrangement functionality your DAW has available. Instrumental integration goes further than ever, thanks to the newly reimagined Light Guide: RGB backlighting accompanies every key, button, and encoder, as well as the touch strip and pitch and modulation wheels. Use these to stay in key, assign zones and switches, indicate scales, and much more to let you focus on the most important aspects of your playing.

Keep yourself connected in any rig

Native Instruments has prioritized integration with each iteration of the Kontrol S Smart Keyboard Controllers, and the Mk3 continues this capacity for accommodation with more customization than ever before. Its USB-C bus-powered architecture supports MIDI connectivity over USB for seamless use with your DAW. The onboard 5-pin DIN MIDI I/O vastly expands interoperative possibilities well beyond the digital frontiers of your NKS virtual instruments, transmitting polyphonic aftertouch data for compatible instruments and devices. You’ll also find a quartet of 1/4-inch TRS jacks for flexible pedal usage: one for sustain, one for expression, and two assignable inputs that can facilitate any number of supplementary control or expression options.

Includes an expansive software library

Your purchase grants you access to an expansive software suite to further enhance the controller’s functionality. The software bundle includes Native Instruments’ sensational Komplete 15 Select and so much more. And thanks to the NKS 2 standard, your new Kontrol S keyboard controller integrates perfectly with each piece of software. With its impressive free software bundle and deep integration, it’s hard to go wrong with a Kontrol S keyboard controller.

Reviews

N.I. S61N MkIII Keyboard
I've had the 61-key version keyboard for a little over 2 years now. I had a little trouble in the beginning with the sustain pedal not acting correctly, and I learned from Sweetwater's tech support that it really needs a Roland style sustain pedal to operate correctly. I bought a DP-10 from Sweetwater and haven't had any trouble since. Most of the time I've been using the keyboard with a Mac Studio computer (Logic Pro) over the USB-C serial port connector, with no problems. I've used it with a PC-windows 11 computer recently (Studio One), and it has operated correctly with that also.

I'm primarily using the keyboard as a front-end for Native Instruments Komplete 15 Collectors Edition software, and as such it has performed nicely. I also use 3rd party software such as EastWest's Platinum Pianos, Superior Drummer 3, Addictive Drums 2, and others, with no problems. I wouldn't recommend the keyboard as a Master Controller, but using as I have has been great. The keyboard has a weighted, synth action keybed, and has worked great for the last 2 years. No problems with broke keys or any problems with the keybed, including no trouble with the keyboard's front panel switches or controls. Sweetwater has the best tech support in the business and I would recommend contacting them with any problems with anything they sell. They've always been the absolute best with concerns I've had with the equipment or software in the past.
Was Initially Frustrated, Love it Now
I was initially VERY disappointed with this controller: Lots of crashes (it would lock up completely for no apparent reason), integration with Logic wouldn't function properly, hung notes, and occasional wonky behaviour. After lots of troubleshooting I discovered the controller was set for MIDI 2.0 while everything on my computer was configured for MIDI 1.0. I changed the controller to 1.0 and all the trouble disappeared. I'm not saying that will work for everyone, but it did for me.

I use the MK3 to control Logic, standalone software instruments, and hardware synths. I love being able to create multiple MIDI templates. So far everything continues to work great. I'm a bit baffled by the review stating there's no way to configure the switches or knobs, it's possible to create templates consisting of up to 16 pages, each one with 8 switches and knobs, each one with a custom name. As always, take this and all reviews with a grain of salt. The best thing to do if at all possible is to try before you buy.
I wanted a keybourd with "Deeeep Integration", Native Instruments have "raise the bar" with this unit.
I am not a programmer, I play by era and by feel, nothing kills like having to fidget around with tiny knobs with your mouse.
That said, this keyboard only runs deep with Native Instruments sounds and third party "partners", but, there is a lot available, and all very high quality.
I use Ableton, but am not a big fan of their sounds, still looking for a breakthrough that will allow deep integration with Reason Rack (these are the sounds and tools I prefer to work with.

I have been working with Chris (my sales tech) for a few years now, he takes good care of me. (Thanks Chris)

Thumbs up
This is a pretty neat unit. NKS integration is nice. Plugin is displayed with hires color graphics, which after years of utilitarian VST hosts is a relief. Favorites are saved in Komplete Kontrol. If you pull up another song in your VST host and add Komplete Kontrol, the favorites will come along. Useful because scrolling through 1300 Diva presets to mark your favorite is... uh... time consuming! Typical useful knobs are displayed with labels on the bottom. Volume isn't always one of them, so a separate knobboard is still useful.

Keybed is softer bottoming than KK1. PAT is nice and is probably responsible for the soft keybed. It did take about 24 hours of getting used to, but is quick, quiet, and reliable so far unlike another PAT keybed I recently tried.

In terms of the lack of immersion issue for VSTs, I think this largely addresses that issue. Keeper.
IMPRESSIVE!
Now that I have discovered Native Instruments, I will not be purchasing any other plugin software. The keyboard makes everything seamless and easy to use, and NI software is user friendly. When purchasing software, I don't have to enter activation codes, serial numbers, pins, passwords, ilok accounts, registration codes etc etc, it's all done automatically - just button clicks!! All other manufacturers require hours sometimes, to figure out how to install and route and make work. I've purchased many plugins from other companies and most often need tech support to make them happen. Not with NI!! The keyboard feels top-quality and interfaces with Cubase perfectly. This is a whole new level of BadAss-ism. A whole new ballgame. A game changer. Hasta la Vista to all the other plugin manufacturers who have made me life hell with their user-UNfriendliness!!
