Transforms Your Ideas Into Polished Sequences

Building on the success of its predecessor and taking cues from the KeyStep mk2, the Arturia KeyStep 37 mk2 stands as a high-value addition to your creative workflow. This compact, yet eminently powerful, 37-key MIDI controller and sequencer integrates seamlessly with both hardware- and software-centric setups, equipping you with a velocity‑sensitive Slimkey keyboard with aftertouch, capacitive-touch pitch and mod strips, and built‑in Chord and Scale play modes. The KeyStep 37 mk2 is a powerfully inspiring idea generator, thanks to its polyphonic step sequencer, 16-mode arpeggiator, and pattern chaining. That said, most of us around Sweetwater find the 1-touch Mutate tools to be among our favorites, generating evolving melodic and rhythmic variations, all supported by four assignable macro encoders for hands-on control. You also get extensive connectivity, including USB‑C MIDI, MIDI DIN, Sync I/O, pedal input, and four configurable CV outputs, enabling you to deploy it in software, hardware, and hybrid setups with equal aplomb. Additionally, the KeyStep 37 mk2 features an easy-to-read OLED screen and an intuitive push encoder, ensuring lightning-fast navigation with minimal unwanted menu diving. Producers searching for a streamlined MIDI controller with tons of onboard music creation tools will find endless uses for the KeyStep 37 mk2.

What’s new with mk2?

With Arturia’s mk2 improvements onboard, the KeyStep 37 is more powerful than ever before. For starters, the controller’s vaunted arpeggiator engine comes equipped with 16 adjustable operation modes, from simple cycled melodies to entirely experimental rhythmic forays. Likewise, the sequencer’s newly added 1-touch Mutation tools, including splice/dice and tie/rest steps, pave the way toward entirely generative melodic possibilities, keeping your compositions creatively unpredictable while maintaining a professional sonic edge. Together, these enhancements make the KeyStep 37 mk2 a powerful engine for controlled experimentation and modern composition.

Unimpressed - one step forward two steps back
Even if I decide not to send this back, I definitely won't be getting rid of the MK I. Using this with Eurorack gear like the Hermod+ is proving glitchy. If it's a power issue, that isn't solvable because one of the many features they did away with was a dedicated 12V power supply input, so that was a mistake.

They boast about the display being an improvement to the old numeric one. But in doing so they have shrank the size of the number display, so those once large, obvious numbers telling you the BPM? Well, the new ones are going to require reading glasses for many people in our increasingly poor-screen-vision human population. Making this almost useless in a live situation, that often involves low lighting and the numerous other sensory distractions involved in live performance. (Just one infuriating example of how some music gear developers seem so utterly clueless when they think they're improving something because they have obviously never performed live before).

And on that BPM note, can I just put it out there that most people don't need a clock to include a tenth of a BPM? When you add a tenth BPM, all you're doing is making it ten times more difficult to reach the whole number you want. Again, the whole-number BPM of the original 37 was perfectly fine with me.

I'll continue to mess with this in the hopes of finding something redeemable. But just a note to all you hardware developers out there. Improving something means keeping everything that was good about the old version, then adding something to that. Not taking things away.
