The Feline Fuzz King

Katzenkönig translates approximately to "The Cat King" — and this fuzz pedal can make your guitar signal wail. It's literally the combination of a modified Tone Bender MkII fuzz and a Rat distortion pedal's clipping section and output buffer. While a lot of fuzz pedals don't appreciate high-output humbuckers, the Katzenkönig's precise circuit tuning and control over input sensitivity make it 'bucker-friendly and ready to pump out that awesome '70s tight, chunky rock tone. On the Katzenkönig you get Input, Gain, Filter, and Volume controls to shape your sound further, and it's all supported by a tough metal chassis with a pro-grade footswitch for superior durability. The Katzenkönig fuzz pedal can be powered by 9V battery or 9V–18V external power supply (neither are included), and running it above 9V may even give you a generous volume boost.

Modern controls for vintage-style tone

The Katzenkönig's topside knobs are easy to manipulate to achieve the sounds you're looking for. At the front of the circuit is the Input sensitivity control; think of it as preamp gain control, limiting as you choose the amplitude of your guitar signal hitting the fuzz section. Gain control lets you push your tone more toward distortion of fuzz, depending on where you set the knob. Built with companderless circuitry, the Volume control can be set low for late-night practice or cranked up for performance. And the Filter control, put at the end of the circuit, puts the finishing touches on your Katzenkönig's tone — clockwise for chocolatey cream and counterclockwise for enhanced brightness.

Gear that makes you want to play

The self-avowed gearheads at Catalinbread focus on making musical devices that they want to use themselves — "gear that gets us excited and inspires us to play." The result of that authentic focus and unwavering integrity is the type of innovation that isn't market-driven; Catalinbread creates its own market for products players love, whether overdrive, delay/reverb, fuzz/distortion, or tremolo/modulation pedals (many of which are available at Sweetwater). The Katzenkönig is a great example of Catalinbread's exciting, inspiring innovation.

Catalinbread Katzenkönig Features:

  • Wide-ranging pedal provides tones from smooth and creamy to wailing, snarling fuzz
  • Combination of a Tone Bender MkII fuzz and a Rat distortion pedal
  • Unlike a lot of fuzz pedals, works well with high-output humbuckers
  • Input, Gain, Filter, and Volume controls for dialing in just the right sound
  • All-metal chassis and high-quality footswitch for long-lasting performance
  • Can be powered by 9V battery or 9V–18V external power supply (neither is included)
  • Made in the USA

Reviews

Definitely a contender if you’re looking for something different
I've had my eye on this one for a few years. I was surprised by getting this from my daughter on Father's Day.

The "Input" circuit/control is the secret sauce and is highly interactive with the "Gain". I can get anything from a slightly overdriven sound to all out fuzz mayhem.

The downside: the higher you turn the Input, the more noisier it gets.

I'm more than happy with it overall. I was stuck in the Big Muff fuzzes for about a decade and have branched out this year for others. This one is a welcome edition on my pedalboard and I can see myself using it for many years.

Great pedal
Can get some great Zeppelin tones ZZTop pink Floyd and a lot in-between, just have to take your time with her. Great pedal, never leaving my board. Thanks catalinbread and Sweetwater.
An all-time pedal
I picked up one of these at my local guitar shop. It's a dream fuzz or a dream distortion.

While it is thick and heavy, it never overruns you with low end and has a tight response.

Best of all, the controls allow you to go from tube screamer to stoner doom in like two turns.
Glorious dirt, many usable tones
I got one of these from another vendor several months ago. I love its interactive character, the harmonic richness it adds, and all the useable sweep on the knobs. When it arrived, I must have woodshedded a good three hours. It really brings the beast out of your amp! My favorite tone so far is a moderate fuzz with tight note definition on my Strat style on my Rebel 30's clean channel. It does pretty well dialing up classic Rat tones too. Be sure to watch Howard Gee's video walking you through how he designed the controls!

Katzenkonig Fuzz Pedal
I bought this after reading the owners manual and noting the ability to adjust the input level to work well with Humbucker guitars and the associated interaction with a Wah pedal. I put this immediately behind my Morley Bad Horse Wah it reacted exactly as described after adjusting the input level! Yea I know that does not happen often. Sounds great with the Wah and just as good on its own with humbuckers and single coils using the provided input adjustment. Its sounds as good if not better than any other fuzz pedal I have but the ability to adjust it to work well either type of pickup really makes it a standout. Well done Catalinbread!.
