The Katana’s Workhorse Head — Upgraded with Gen 3 Performance

Equipped with evolved Tube Logic technology and a 5-inch internal speaker, the BOSS Katana Head Gen 3 delivers immaculate valve-inspired tone and comprehensive stage, studio, and practice functionality. This 100-watt amplifier head is equipped with a sweeping sonic arsenal of six amplifier voices (including a new Pushed voice), six voice variations, and the Gen 3 addition of a Bloom switch to sharpen up your sound. Next, five independent stompbox-inspired effects sections provide you with plenty of delay, reverb, and modulation options to sculpt your dream tone. Picky about your EQ? This Katana comes equipped with a powerful 3-band EQ, 3-way Contour control, and Presence control for serious studio-grade tone-shaping potential. These features alone would make the Katana Gen 3 an amp to be reckoned with. Still, the truth is they’re not the half of it: you also get onboard Power Control, eight Tone Setting memories, Stereo Expand functionality, cab-sim-equipped Line Out/headphone/USB outs, upgraded BOSS Tone Studio app, and scores of other features. And just like its MkII predecessor, the Katana Head Gen 3 seals the deal with an internal 5-inch speaker for quiet late-night practice sessions.

What’s new for Gen 3?

The Katana Head Gen 3 comes swinging right out of the gate with a newly evolved and enhanced iteration of BOSS’s revered Tube Logic technology, capturing all the harmonic nuance and dynamic feel of a true tube amplifier. These improvements elevate all the Katana series’ prior amplifier models to a whole new level of valve-inspired realism, but the technology is truly on full display in Gen 3’s all-new amplifier type: Pushed.

Engineered to exactly replicate the ever-coveted edge-of-breakup sound, the Pushed amp character artfully embodies the touch-sensitive gain characteristics and lively dynamics of a clean tube combo cranked to its breaking point. Moreover, Gen 3 introduces a Bloom switch that Sweetwater guitarists favor for its ability to sharpen your Katana’s edge with a more focused attack and a rich, enveloping bass response. Finally, the Katana’s third generation comes complete with a whole host of improvements to the BOSS Tone Studio, including UI and editing upgrades for a quicker, more straightforward workflow.

12 amp voices to explore

In addition to Gen 3’s new Pushed amp, this Katana contains all five of the MkII series’ time-tested amplifier voices, optimized by BOSS’s evolved Tube Logic technology. Lead, Crunch, and Pushed are all aimed to please dirt-obsessed players with a wealth of remarkably tubelike tones, and you even get a “Brown” voice that delivers screaming ’80s hard-rock sounds in spades. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Katana Gen 3 series boasts a lush, full-bodied Clean voice and an Acoustic voice to accommodate your acoustic-electric arsenal. It all adds up to a grand total of six amplifiers to choose from, but that’s only half the story — a Variation switch effectively doubles the amp tones at your disposal with distinct sonic spins on each amp’s sound.

Wireless control via BOSS’s optional Bluetooth adapter

While previous Katana amplifiers required a USB connection to access the editor, each model in the third generation now comes equipped with a dedicated jack on the back to connect with the optional BOSS BT-Dual Bluetooth Audio MIDI Dual Adapter. This adapter allows you to make instant edits to your Katana’s tone straight from your mobile device. Plus, you can also use it to stream songs and backing tracks to make the most of your woodshedding sessions.

Power Amp In(put)

Got a floor unit or tube preamp you can’t live without? You can access all 100 watts of the Katana Head Gen 3’s Class AB power section using the power amp input. Here, you bypass everything before the power amp, so what you hear is exactly what you expect — only live and in living color.

Cab-emulated outputs for silent recording and performance

While the Katana Head Gen 3 offers a Power Control for getting cranked-amp tone at a low volume level, you can achieve truly silent operation onstage or in the studio by connecting the amp's line output to a line input on your recording device or a PA. Cab emulation is available on the USB and headphone outputs, as well, so however you choose to monitor your Head Gen 3, it'll feel like you're standing in front of an amp. Selectable cab resonance (Vintage/Modern/Deep) and Air Feel miking emulation (direct, distant, or blended) allow you to tailor emulated tones to taste.

Powered by the Gen 3 BOSS Tone Studio editor

Upgraded with an enhanced UI and editing options for Gen 3, the Katana Head Gen 3 supports over 60 timeless BOSS effects, and you can load an entire series of them for instant access. The amp's Booster/Mod, FX/Delay, and Reverb controls give you easy 1-knob access to up to five simultaneous effects types, with a color-coded button to switch between preset effects. To completely customize your effects and amp settings, connect the Head Gen 3 to your computer via USB and load up the Tone Studio software. Here, you can create your own setup or download setups created by pro guitarists at the BOSS Tone Studio website. Best of all, the Katana Head Gen 3 can store multiple custom amp and effects profiles for instant recall, making this head a versatile multichannel amplifier.

Reviews

wow I now see the light!
Just received my Katana head it has a lot of cool features the combo amp doesn't have. I have it paired with BOSS GT 1000 it sounds better through the waza cabinet for sure.

Fyi the flatest response is on the acoustic amp on the katana it will give you more the signal from the processor! It sounds fantastic. I haven't even used the effcs loop yet direct in is awesome! You will need to adjust parameters to suit the amp they stand out otherwise
Music background: 36 years multi instrumentalist
This Amp Rips And Then Some!!
To all the one star reviews, those should be left under the Bluetooth connector or tone studio software instead of bashing the head itself? For those of us that are just using the head for the built-in circuitry and presets and aren't messing with tone studio, this thing is absolutely amazing. So ignore those one star reviews, because the head itself is mind blowing for a solid state amp. I your in the fence about purchasing this head don't be, its in its own league for the price, it can't be beat. Also has a power amp input so it takes any pedal and turns them into preamp. I can't say enough good about this head, oh and did I mention how loud this thing is!! Even the 0.5 watt power control is loud!! I can't recommend this head enough. Also I play modern metal, 7/8 string dejent, articulated heavy tones, has built in boost also does dad rock, cleans are amazing literally nothing this head can't do!! Highly highly recommend!!

Best deal on a great sound
I had a Roland Cube 60w 10" amp years ago and bought the 1x12 100w gen 1 combo (practically the same amp). I had it a year and until I did a benefit show one day I never heard the amp-- I ran processors on the clean channel. That day without the promised backline, I had to resort to that still new Gen 1 Katana I toted around in my trunk. Afterwards, explaining to the sound guy why I kept lowering myself to that tiny amp every time I switched sounds, he let me know how great that amp actually sounded. I purchased more Katanas after that over time and now bought the 100w head/2x12 cab deal.
I also bought the GA-FC and use an older Gen 1 Katana 2x12 100w combo with the setup. Just like every other Katana I've had and have, the 100w head is excellent. Can do metal and alternative to jazz and country and has most standard effects. Honestly in comparison, the price range makes this amplifier one of the better ones you can get - hands down. This is my stage and show amp, it's durable and good looking. My practice rig is a Katana 1x12 100w combo and my rehearsal rig is a Katana 2x12 100w combo, can't go wrong here.
Incredible sounding amp!
After using hi-gain heavy tube and solid-state heads for years, I decided I needed something more compact, lightweight, but with the power I was used to. This amp checks all those boxes and more. I purchased the Ga-FC Footswitch with it, but I did not go for the Bluetooth feature initially, although I might add it later.

Thoroughly impressed so far with this little monster! The head sounds great through my 90's Marshall 1960a cab. It's more than loud enough for band practice with a loud drummer. The 5-inch speaker and .5-watt setting are perfect for practice, even if you like hi-gain. I usually practice through the 5-inch speaker now or the headphone jack on back. It sounds great through headphones and studio monitors. For now, I use the USB-C connection to my USB-C on my laptop. I've recorded using this head with PreSonus and Ableton. Highly suggest using the Boss Librarian and downloading the crunch., drive, and clean "Livesets". This saves so much time dialing in your tones. I've only added and changed the effect chains because the tones are already so good. I think I might downgrade my cab and get a 2x12 instead. With all the possibilities to connect to PA's through DI, I really won't need to lug around a huge cab anymore either.

The only con I can find is that, if there is a tuner like some say on the footswitch, I haven't found it yet. This really isn't a con though bc I've had my Boss TU-2 for at least 20 years.

Overall, best amp I've owned so far!
Great amp head
I had been wanting another Boss Katana since I sold the Gen 2 combo amp that I had. I was trying to decide between this one and the Artist model. The Gen 3 Artist Head isn't out yet, and wasn't sure it was worth the extra $, so I went with this one and I feel like that was the best decision I could have made. I liked how the Artist model had the controls on the front instead of the top, but I think having the built in speaker to be able to use it with or without a cabinet is a more valuable feature to have for me. I have had this for about 2.5 weeks now and been using it with a Peavey 2 x 12 50W (mono) cabinet that I already had from Sweetwater. I won't be able to use the 100w setting until I replace the 2nd Greenback with a Vintage 30 like I did with one already, but I just play at home for my own enjoyment and the 0.5w setting is more than enough for what I use it for. It feels like there is an unlimited amount of different sounds you can get from this head with the 6 different "channels" that each have a variation selectable for them, along with all the built in effects. Overall this was a great purchase. I would also like to thank Erik Bothwell, he has been very helpful with all the purchases I have made from Sweetwater in the last 2 years. He is super knowledgeable about gear and will help you with any questions you have.
