A Perfect Mixer for Live Performance

If you're going to perform live with a mixer, then you need something that handles like an instrument, and the Keith McMillen Instruments K-Mix is perfect for the job. This combination 8-in/10-out USB audio interface, touch-sensitive control surface, and standalone mixer puts premium sound quality and astonishingly flexible MIDI control in the center of your rig. High-quality, low-noise preamps? The K-Mix has two of them. How about processing and effects? From EQ to dynamics and even reverb, it's all there. And since there are no moving parts onboard the K-Mix, you can count on this control surface/interface to travel well and provide a lifetime of flawless performance.

Keith McMillen Instruments K-Mix Performance Mixer/Interface at a Glance:
  • Virtually indestructible yet incredibly playable
  • Excellent preamps and connectivity options
  • DSP delivers onboard tone shaping power
Virtually indestructible yet incredibly playable

With its array of LED-backlit touch strips, buttons, and rotary zones, the K-Mix hardly resembles a conventional mixer or control surface, yet these tactile controls not only cover all of the functions you want to have on hand, they're far more responsive than traditional mechanical knobs and faders. For instance, you can jump between fader levels just by tapping on different locations on a touch strip, and sliding your finger on the rotary control zones is quicker than twisting a knob. And, since all control values are reflected by underlying LEDs, jumping from function to function is instant. What's more, these controls are virtually indestructible, so you can comfortably toss the K-Mix in your bag and go, without worrying about faders falling off or knobs caving in the PCB below.

Excellent preamps and connectivity options

The connectivity packed into the K-Mix doesn't just sound great, it's incredibly flexible too. For starters, all of the audio I/O on the K-Mix is on balanced 1/4" TRS jacks, with the exception of the two muPre microphone preamplifiers, which feature combo jacks. These extraordinarily low-noise preamps offer full +48V phantom power and up to 60dB of gain, plus they include hi-Z instrument-level direct inputs as well. On the digital side, 24-bit AKM converters capable of up to 96kHz sample rates ensure that your sound remains pristine throughout processing, recording, or computer playback. What really caught the attention of the performing artists here at Sweetwater is that the K-Mix's full 8-in/10-out I/O is available without hooking it up to a computer, so you can leave your laptop at home and still take advantage of it extensive routing and processing options.

DSP delivers onboard tone shaping power

Whether you're using it along with your DAW or in standalone mixer mode, the DSP processing onboard Keith McMillen Instruments' K-Mixgives you a whole lot of extra mileage out of your sound sources. For instance, each channel includes a 3-band semi-parametric EQ with up to 18dB of boost or cut per band. Fully adjustable compressor/limiters allow you to smooth out or punch up your sounds, and you can gate out noise if you need to. On top of that, there's a rich master reverb effect onboard, with dedicated sends for each channel. And, for added versatility on stage and in the studio, the K-Mix also includes four onboard surround-sound processing modes, which turn each of the rotary zones into surround panners.

Keith McMillen Instruments K-Mix Performance Mixer/Interface Features:
  • A unique touch-controlled USB audio interface, MIDI control surface, and standalone mixer
  • Versatile I/O includes a pair of muPre preamps plus 6 additional inputs and 10 outputs
  • High-quality 24-bit AKM converters provide up to 96kHz resolution digital audio

  • Lack of moving parts makes this an ideal part of your mobile music-performance rig

Incredible Perfomance and Studio Mixer

So first off, you'll have to understand that what you're getting here is something unlike any other mixer on the market, and for the price you're just going to have to let go of your expectations that you'll be getting an Apollo Twin interface with mixing and MIDI capabilities. That's absurd. What you ARE getting is an audio interface/mixer/controller with sound quality on par with other interfaces in it's price range, and with a huge amount of functionality. I mean, I bought this about a month ago and continue to be amazed by this device. It meets all of my needs and expectations, and then exceeds them. Full control over nearly every parameter via dedicated or shift-enabled buttons, with the rest controlled by a tightly programmed editing software with an excellent UI. One of the coolest things about this piece of kit is that you can program up to 12 presets directly on the hardware, and up to 999 in the software. I've already found this useful to quickly access parameter changes that accommodate my various setups in the studio and on the road. For example, I have one with phantom power and rumble filter enabled for my condenser mic, then stereo paired inputs for my synth and toys, and another with all stereo pairs and phono preamps enabled for turntables. And that's just two. The DSP effects are also very useful in recording and playing live, and the ability to control multiple outputs allows me to check my mixes on separate reference systems in a cinch. Being able to run analog inputs and control Ableton via MIDI simultaneously is a game changer. I could go on and on about this mixer, but they have a well written and easy to follow manual for the rest. If you think this might fit your needs, I can almost guarantee it will. Just buy it. And call your Sweetwater sales engineer for assistance, as mine (Jason Seger) was of the utmost help in this decision as always.

K-Mix delivers!

I play keys live with a rig that combines hardware instruments and virtual instruments hosted in Mainstage. I've been looking for a combination mixer/interface for years, and for various reasons never found anything that worked exactly the way I wanted. Until the K-Mix. The K-Mix is a great-sounding and versatile little mixer, and, as a USB interface, sounds terrific, with low latency and flexible routing. The user interface may seem daunting at first, but I found it surprisingly easy to use. Plus, there are no moving parts on the from panel, no pots or sliders to wear out. I'm very impressed with the thought that went into this device, and recommend it very highly!

Sweetwater Advice

Hannahlynn Dalton

I was working on a complex performance piece and had been using a controller that forced me to memorize 10 minutes worth of gestures, when I discovered the Keith McMillen Instruments K-Mix. With its extensive controls and simple editor software, I flew through the setup and pulled off the piece perfectly. I've used it countless times since, often as a mixer control surface in my studio. I'm used to traditional mixers, so I'm impressed by how natural and familiar the K-Mix's faders and rotary controllers feel. Another thing I love about it is how easy it is to stick it in my backpack, so I can use it whenever and wherever I go.
