Arguably The BEST Keyboard Amp For Live Performance

I bought this after years of playing through powered speakers. I only hesitated to switch over because of the weight difference (my speakers weighed 30lbs ea. This amp is more than double that). But I now understand why people prefer the heavier amps for keys: This one is well worth its weight! I got so used to the thin sounds that were reproduced through my twin 2000 watt 2-way speakers that I was absolutely FLOORED when I first played through this KB4. This amp literally blows the wheels off those 2000 watt speakers! The bass is punchy and thick, the B3 organ sounds I use a lot came through with renewed richness and fullness. Even the acoustic pianos had an entirely different aura of realism compared to the other speakers. I am so glad I switched over to a dedicated keyboard combo amp like this. And, as usual, Peavey equipment is constructed to last--probably longer than my career!

This Thing Is a Beast.

I needed an amp for my E kit to play live at a medium sized venue. I trust Peavey since I own a mostly Peavey PA and a small venue portable. I bought this not realizing how large it really was (not the smartest thing to do). When it arrived it was massive with a sliding handle on the back and casters to help move it. I plugged it up and it was awesome. I added a Peavey Sanctuary Series white 12" PA Cab that I added corners and handles to for gigging. I have the amp on one side of my kit and the cab on the other. It has other inputs for a mic and other gear but I only use it for the drums (except for when our bassist blew up his amp and he used a channel of this until it was fixed. It performed excellently). I've never come close to full volume on this and it sounds awesome. Excellent separation of the drum tones and an stereo XLR line out if I need to connect to the house. It also has an effects loop which I don't use but is a nice touch. I'm not sure what expectations folks have or maybe they buy things that aren't designed for the intended use, but this is a solid, well built amp that sounds great with my drums. Read the manual, set you levels properly and you're good to go. I'm not a fan of the rear facing I/O panel but I knew that going in and the wheels could be a bit larger to handle more rough surfaces, but all in all it's a beast and looks and feels like it.

Loud, accurately produced, clear, warm sound with great Low End...

The title really says it all: I have had this for a couple of weeks now, and used a microphone, keyboard, acoustic bass, and electric bass through it, often 3 at the same time, and it delivered great, loud, un-distorted sound. I can't imagine a couple of comments having loudness a con for this unit; I've seen loudness as a Plus on other comparative reviews. This thing rattled my windows w/the levels at 4, using an active pre-amp Fender AEB. Perhaps they got a lemon as 1 person suggested, but Peavey has incredible QC, so I'm more inclined to believe it was damaged, as it was used when they got it.

I bought this primarily for my acoustic-electric bass (there aren't combo/amps specific to that application, but there should be [hint-hint Hartley!], and secondarily to combine amplification for my Shure EMB48 microphone and Yamaha EPT 300 keyboard practice studio. WOW, it is bigger and heavier than I expected (I'm old school so more than OK w/both), and has insane high-volume tolerance. I will now ditch my Hartke 12" practice/small gig bass amp, because I never use it any more, even w/solid-body electric basses. Controls are simple and EZ to understand, though I kind of wish the inputs were faced up and backward 45 degrees rather than straight back so I can see & use them without bending over so much while having an a bass strapped around me.

Pros
Thick, quality build - built like a shick brithouse :-)
Loudness/tolerance
Warmth of tone (never "tinty")
Multiple channels produce remarkably great sound, esp for acoustic instruments and microphones (and keys, of course!)
Value at price point
Reliability
Transports easily w/retractable handle and wheels

Cons
Wish it had some basic effects options, esp chorus and reverb
Inputs/Outputs are all facing backwards, making it a bit awkward to change between songs while practicing/gigging
Appearance - would like it to have more character, perhaps some contrast and/or visual details, or even lighting effects
Music background: Primarily bass & back-up vocals; R & R

Great sound, great features, great amp!

I bought my KB 4 as an upgrade to my aging KB 3, which I bought when this series was first introduced. I was pretty happy with the KB 3, but it was beginning to show its age, and becoming a little flaky after 8 years of use. In my new amp, I wanted one with the same feature set as the KB 3, but with a bit more oomph.

The KB 4 sounds great. The highs are nice and smooth, and the bottom end is nice and full. Overall, the tone is very well balanced. All the controls feel smooth, and the connectors are nice and tight. Typical of Peavey amps, it's built like a tank. Well placed, heavy-duty hardware makes moving the amp relatively easy, despite the weight.

I have only one "complaint" with the KB 4, which is the master effects loop. It's a stereo effects loop, with no mono switching. All of the channel inputs allow connecting mono inputs on the left channel, and like most mixers, the input is then sent to both left and right buses. The master effects loop is also stereo, but if you run a mono effects rig (like a standard pedal board), plugging into the left channel does not split out to both channels. So, when the signal is then summed to feed the power amp, the clean signal is summed with the effected one, almost negating the effects. The work-around, of course, is a "Y" cable on the effects loop return, but that's an extra cable to cause problems on a gig, and I wish that Peavey had some sort of mono-switching on the master effects loop.

Man is this amp big!

I purchased a guitar synth recently from Sweetwater that sounded poor through our Fishman Loudbox acoustic amp. Roland recommended a keyboard amp or PA...

...So, I bit the bullet and purchased the KB4 from Sweetwater using their 10% gift card discount.

First impression...Man is this box huge. It dwarfs the Loudbox. Weighs a ton (80 pounds +/-). Thank heavens it has rear casters and a pull-up handle. Kinda wish it had casters at all corners. It is a beast to move around. Good thing I am a big guy!

Regarding Sound Quality...

The before-mentioned synth sounds great through the KB4, even given that the KB4 is not a "stereo" amp.

My modelers (amp and effects) also sound great through the KB4.

And my steel and nylon guitars sound great through it. Ironically, the only instrument I have not tried (yet) is a keyboard!

The KB4 has a bold, somewhat bass-leaning, crisp and tight sound. No muddiness at all. Just an in your face, clear, hum-free, buzz-free sound. I am very impressed.

Connections
I like the mixer. I could use one more set of stereo line inputs (like the KB5). But it handles three sets of stereo inputs which is probably enough for most folks.

I chose the KB4 over the Roland models because the KB4 offers send/receive connections. The KB4 and Rolands do not have effects, reverb, nothing. So, I wanted the send/return for outboard effects. Also, the KB4 offers XLR balanced L/R output connections for a PA, mixer, etc. The similar Roland model does not.

There are a couple of cons:
1. I could use one more set of stereo inputs.
2. No ability to chain another keyboard amp for a left/right stereo setup.
3. Master volume pot is stiff.

Summary
I highly recommend this amp for its clear, faithful, in your face sound, its quality reproduction of the synth and amp modeler outputs, its mixer-connectivity options, and the low price. And it is an impressive (and massive) acoustic guitar amp.
