The Latest Incarnation of the Venerable J Bass

The Fender American Professional II Jazz Bass V takes a tried-and-true design and complements it with modern updates. The latest incarnation of a groundbreaking instrument, this 5-string electric bass guitar boasts a strong, lightweight, and stable roasted pine body, which pairs nicely with the classic punch provided by its V-Mod II single-coil pickups. Playing this J Bass is an absolute joy — its fast, comfortable Slim C-shaped neck, smooth rolled fingerboard, and sculpted neck heel are guaranteed to elevate your playing. Tapered-shaft tuners and a HiMass vintage bridge round out the American Pro II J Bass V’s player-friendly features. The American Pro II Jazz Bass V was designed from the ground up to offer you an ideal gigging and recording instrument.

One of the best necks in the business

Many bass players (including a bevy of us here at Sweetwater) believe that J Basses boast some of the best necks ever. And, thanks to its to-die-for Slim C shape, the American Pro II Jazz Bass V’s neck doesn’t disappoint. This ultra-comfortable profile fills your hand perfectly, while leaving enough wiggle room to facilitate effortless playability. The American Professional II Jazz Bass V sports smooth rolled fingerboard edges and a Super-Natural satin finish, ensuring that this is one J Bass that you won’t want to put down. You’ll also appreciate the American Pro II J Bass V's sculpted neck heel, which provides a comfortable feel and easy access to this electric bass guitar’s upper register.

Simple and effective electronics

Jazz Basses boast a 2-pickup setup, allowing you to pursue diverse tonal variations. The single-coils and the bass's 3-knob setup have been responsible for a wide array of some of the most legendary bass tones in history. The Fender American Professional II Jazz Bass V sticks close to its heritage with a duet of V-Mod II single-coil pickups. Designed by pickup guru Tim Shaw, these single-coil pickups exhibit the same warmth and clarity as their predecessor, while adding extra articulation and all the J Bass punch you can handle.

Player-friendly appointments

Though the American Professional II Jazz Bass V looks and feels like a familiar friend, it's loaded with features that enhance both playability and tone. One of the most notable features is its 5-saddle HiMass vintage-style bridge. This bridge's rigid construction works in concert with this 5-string electric bass guitar’s bone nut to transfer more of the string's energy to the body of the instrument, enhancing its sustain and articulation. And the American Pro II Jazz Bass V’s tapered-shaft tuner design ensures you have optimal break angle and tension on your string posts.

Fender American Professional II Jazz Bass V Features:

  • Tried-and-true J Bass design with player-friendly updates
  • 2 V-Mod II single-coil pickups offer classic punch with added articulation
  • Roasted pine body is strong, lightweight, and stable
  • Slim C neck profile with Super-Natural satin finish is fast and comfortable
  • Rolled fingerboard edges provide a smooth playing experience
  • Sculpted neck heel provides a comfortable feel and easy access to upper register
  • Tapered-shaft tuners keep proper tension on your string posts
  • HiMass vintage bridge adds sustain and articulation

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Note: While demo items from Fender do not include the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warranty, you can shop with confidence knowing that this item is backed and covered by Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Incredible Bass

I'd never been a Fender bass fan. I played a Jazz bass (many) years ago and couldn't control feedback.

I thought I'd never own or play a Fender until earlier this year when I purchased a 1968 Fender Telecaster bass. It had to be resurrected and challenged my luthier over a 2-month period. When it was finally delivered, I was really impressed with the playability and build quality - not to mention its ability to survive years of abuse until it came into my possession.

I had a several case of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) and my search brought me to this sweet Fender Jazz bass and Sweetwater. I was most impressed with the roasted pine finish of this particular bass and purchased it in late August.

While the bass played alright out of the box, I decided to have my luthier perform a setup of the guitar and restring it with Elixir strings.

It now plays like a dream. I'll get to use it live for the first time this weekend with a band I've been trying to get into for the last 2-and-a-half years. I'm thinking they'll be impressed.
Music background: Over 50 years.

Way better than I expected! The low B actually sounds right!

Did not think I would love this bass as much as I do- But Damn this thing just talks/sings to me!
Cannot put this loving instrument down- Damn! she is just so pleasing to play!
The only change I did to this amazing instrument is give it a black pickguard and La Bella strings-
I am convinced that there some kind of positive vibe in the legacy of the Fender brand- I have multiple Fender Guitars and basses - and I feel the vibe in every one of them- so much so as I have a name for every one of my loves! From my first Fender Bass back in 1976- a natural finish P bass- I felt it! Had a few famous name basses before that first Fender - I thought they were great - But when I felt the vibe of the Fender- I sold them all!
I am 63 now - been playing for over 47 years and could not be any happier with this new 5 string Jazz bass!
Music background: Bassist / songwriter since 1975

The One

There are only things to love about this bass.

The satin finished neck needs to be felt to be believed and coupled with the rolled fret edges, my left hand glides on this neck better than any bass I've owned or played.

The roasted pine body is lightweight and has a beautiful grain to it. I love the look of the pine so much that I bought a clear pickguard so it can be seen in its full majesty.

In terms of tone, it sounds exactly what you'd want from a jazz bass. Simple yet versatile controls giving you all that punchy, growling, zingy JB tone. The low B sounds as great as it can on a bass of this scale length.

The bass came almost perfectly set up, just needing some minor truss rod and saddle hight adjustments to get the action where I like it. No QC issues to speak of.

When I bought this bass I was looking for an instrument that I would be happy playing for the rest of my life and after having it for half a year now, ai know this is the one.

Sweet!

In all honesty, I have never been a Fender bass fan; but I really like this instrument. Very well set up and playable out of the box, excellent and versatile sound, nice balance, and a reasonable weight. And the case is nice. This bass passes the look test in flying colors also. My only quibble is that I'm not crazy about the strings; they aren't bad and are easy on the fingers, but not quite my taste. If you are looking for a very solid, playable bass that won't destroy the bank, this one is worth a very serious look.
Music background: Played for 50 plus years and still gigging.
