Focusrite ISA 828 Microphone Preamp at a Glance:
  • A remarkable, affordable preamp
  • Line inputs, easy DAW integration
  • Variable impedance
A remarkable, affordable preamp

The ISA828 features eight original ISA transformer-based pre amps in a single robust 2U chassis, and offers the Focusrite signature sound at the lowest cost per channel to date. The eight ISA series transformer-based microphone preamps feature exactly the same vintage microphone preamplifier design as the original ISA110 module from Focusrite's critically acclaimed Forte console (including the original Lundahl L1538 transformer).

Line inputs, easy DAW integration

The pre-amps are complemented by eight line inputs, four instrument inputs. Thanks to its convenient 25 pin D-Type connectors, the ISA828 also integrates quickly and seamlessly with Pro Tools HD, as well as other popular hard disk recorders and mixing desks.

Variable impedance

The microphone input stage includes a variable impedance circuit, allowing the user to switch between four carefully selected input impedance settings. The original ISA110 setting is supplemented by three further impedance settings to perfectly match/creatively mismatch the pre amp with any microphone collection. The four front panel instrument inputs also feature high and low impedance options to provide a comprehensive and accessible DI solution. Insert switches are also featured on every channel, should the need arise to place extra processing between the pre amp and converter. Vintage design highpass filters are also provided on every channel.

Focusrite ISA828 Microphone Preamp Features:
  • Eight original Focusrite ISA transformer-based pre amps in a single 2U space
  • Works seamlessly with Pro Tools, as well as other hard disc recorders and mixing consoles
  • Switchable input impedance (four settings per channel) provides a range of response flavors.
  • Eight line inputs with four front panel instrument inputs featuring high impedance options
  • Switchable Insert points on every channel
  • Vintage design highpass filters on every channel eliminate unwanted low frequencies without effecting the rest of the audio signal
  • Six LED Input meters on all eight channels provide clear input metering independent of the DAW
  • Sturdy 2U chassis
The Focusrite ISA 828 gives you signature Focusrite performance and a great value!

very good and solid

this was my first pre. im using them for my drum mics(8 out of 13). all i can say they are clean, they really transfer what they really take as sound. no coloration, loooooooooooooooots of headroom. i did countless drum recorings. i also used for bass guitar direct plug and the result was amazing as well. its recommended. i dont imagine my studio without them.

Focusrite ISA 828

Excellent Value Preamp. First use on drums yeilded very good results especially on toms ond overheads. Why these get a rating of neutral and sterile is beyond me. I wouldnt heasitate to use on kick and snare in a pinch, but would probably use API or Neve type pre as they are a little thicker sounding. Overall I would reccomend ths preamp to any Professional or Home Studio.

Straight up quality

It's one thing to have 8 channels of preamps in two rack spaces, it's another to have 'pro' Focusrite gear in those same spaces at a reasonable cost. My Isa 828 gets used mainly for drums (sounds very solid), but with the flexibility it offers in inputs, gains, and resistances on input signal, it can adapt well to almost any task. Worth every cent.

A Great Solution for Recording Drums the Right Way

I was in need of 8 solid pres to raise the bar in recording quality sounding drums. Obviously, you need great drums and a great drummer for quality drums, but great mics and a great set of pres sure help. These pres sound very clean, warm, and transparent. The variable impedence settings allow so much flexibility in maximizing a mics positive characteristics. You would be searching for a long time and to no avail if you were looking for 8 channels that sound as good as these and that cost the same amount. I have a Great River ME-1NV, which is my go-to mic pre, but sometimes I find I need a cleaner sound, which always makes me smile that I have my ISA828. Make your drums and your drummer smile. Get an ISA 828...unless of course you have tones of $4000 or more, because that's what it will cost you to find 8 channels that are better than the 828's.

Serious overheating issues

When working the unit sounds amazing. However, I had total static coming out of 3 channels after using it almost a year. Sweetwater sent it to get repaired 3 times before having to replace it since it couldn't be fixed. Now the new unit has had 2 knobs I only used once or twice quit working, and channel one is complete static. The isa one, 228 and 428 are great units if you are looking for a clean sounding pre with a lot of gain. This unit is just has too much packed into it. It was also made in china and all of the knobs have been crooked on every unit I've tried. My saffire pro 40 is a lot more sturdy and professional.
