A Full-blown Pedalboard-ready Tube Preamp

The Friedman IR-X is a feature-laden guitar preamp that fits right on your pedalboard. And since it's loaded with two high-voltage 12AX7 tubes, this stompbox delivers the harmonic richness and touch response you'd expect from a full-sized Friedman amplifier. The IR-X's two channels cover everything from warm cleans to high-gain overdrive, and each channel includes a boost to push your drive to the next level. Per-channel 3-band EQs and voicing switches are onboard. You can plug the IR-X into a power amp and cab for a genuine air-pushing experience or use the onboard power amp simulation and low-latency IR loader to go direct. The IR-X includes an ultra-transparent effects loop, three multifunction footswitches, MIDI programmability, USB MIDI for DAW integration, and a headphone output. Friedman aficionados searching for the ultimate grab-and-go guitar rig will positively flip for the IR-X. It delivers killer Friedman tone — no amp required.

Two channels of tube-infused tone

The IR-X includes two fully independent, footswitchable channels. Channel one ranges from squeaky-clean British-voiced chime to Plexi-style crunch. Channel two yields Friedman's trademark high-gain tone, chock-full of percussive punch, note articulation, and searing sustain. Best of all, the IR-X isn't an emulation or a starved-plate "tube" amplifier — it's a genuine high-voltage, 12AX7-loaded tube preamp. The guitarists here at Sweetwater concur: When you plug into the IR-X, you'll experience the same harmonic-rich tone, expressive touch response, and complex gain characteristics you'd get from a full-sized Friedman tube amplifier.

All the sound-shaping controls you need

No matter how you want to sculpt your tone, the Friedman IR-X is willing to oblige you. Each of its two channels includes a 3-band EQ, Volume and Gain controls, and a footswitchable boost. The clean channel boasts a 3-way Bright voicing switch and the dirty channel features a 2-way Tight voicing switch. Got pedals? Who doesn't! That's why the IR-X includes a bypassable effects loop.

Power amp simulation and IR loader

While you can plug the IR-X into a power amp and guitar cabinet, this stompbox-style preamp also includes a power amp simulation with tweakable Presence and Thump parameters and a full-featured IR loader for sending your signal straight to the board. You can use the 12 Friedman cabinet IRs that come free with the IR-X, or you can use your own custom IRs. Selecting an IR is as easy as flipping the top-panel 3-way toggle switch or loading a custom file via the IR-X's editing software.

IR-X
Since I got the IR-X this is the happiest I've been with my tone in a long time. It's extremely easy to dial in a good tone and works great in a lot of different applications. Really versatile too. It can cover just about any genre. I even use the Plexi channel for worship on Sundays and it sounds and feels amazing. The two applications I use it most are direct in and into the effects return of a Bad Cat Cub III30. It turns the Bad Cat into a fire breathing modded Plexi. Sound amazing! This is the perfect bridge of analog and digital imo. Love that it has midi too. Makes it easy to change channels with my Voodoo Lab PX-8. My only nitpick is I wish the knobs were a little harder to turn and maybe round. They seem to get bumped easy, especially when transferring in my pedaltrain soft case.
Life Changing!
A special thank you Frank Gerard and co for shipping this out so fast!

I just got the unit today and since I put it on my board I have been on cloud 9. My setup finally sounds, acts, and FEELS like a real tube amp. Paired with the Boss SD-1W I ordered with it, I have everything from the most pristine cleans to the absolute meanest metal grind. And I mean MEAN, modern, face-melting brutality.

I haven't been this inspired to play in a long time.

I run it in the loop of my HX Stomp. Those two units alone would make the perfect all-in-one small rig. So much power on tap.

No Tube Amp to Carry!
I'm getting perfectly acceptable tone direct to the PA. I haven't used it live yet, but sounds great in my studio. Mounted on a pedal board with time effects in the F/X Loop. I'm using the Joe Walsh Double Classic for overdrive in front of Channel One, rather than Channel Two on the IR-X. (I'm too old for Heavy Metal Tones...)

Very pleased with this purchase.

This is it!
I have chased the real valve amp tones with several modelers in my collection but alway craving more .. Valve modelers have come along way however for me always makes me miss a the warmth, sag and articulation of a real tube amp. This is not the case with the IRX, This Friedman pedal makes me play better and has these overtones and cool feedback of a huge Marshall plexi power amp and cabinet but also cleans up very nicely when dialing back the volume knob with our sacrificing tone. I also feel that a lot of todays most desired popular modelers color your tone and which sort of makes you feel disconnected from your instrument creating a very sterile feel. The Friedman actually is the opposite, it does not color your tone and actually enhances the natural sound of your guitar. I am so happy with this sound. Now for the bads: I think the IR switches could be better positioned since they are so close to the control knobs it's easy to accidentally change parameters by accident, I also think the boost and Overdrive adjustment knobs on the side could have been put on the front face of the pedal for easier access. If you have this on a pedal board you would have to pull the pedal off to make adjustments, not a big deal, since you can make those adjustments one time for taste and leave and forget. Other than that this is a win for me.
Thank you Friedman and thank you sweetwater for the fast shipment!

Amazing unit!!
I have yet to have "not" been able to find great tones in any application with the IR-X. By far and away THE most realistic amp/preamp simulator. But that's because it IS the real thing. High voltage, real tube preamp. Once again, Dave and the Friedman team have knocked it out of the park! Looking forward to purchasing another, so I can have one that stays on a live board, and the other as the centerpiece to my home studio setup. Perfect clean to driven "electric guitar" tones for any genre… without compromise!!
