Go Direct with Friedman’s Two-Channel Tube Preamp DI

With the IR-D dual tube preamp and DI pedal, Friedman sets its sights on the perfect marriage of modern amenities and authentic tube tone. In essence, the IR-D is a Friedman preamp section housed in a pedal that boasts two independent channels and convenient IR technology. Friedman’s famous Dirty Shirley and Twin Sister amplifiers inspire the IR-D, which runs two glowing hot 12AX7 tubes at high voltages that ensure true-tube response with none of the voltage-starved tonal flimsy of underpowered tubes. Each channel provides a laundry list of surgical controls: 3-band EQ, independent boost, Structure, Bright, IR cabinet/power amp simulations, plus 13 IRs preloaded for sending studio-grade tones to FOH mixers and more. Controls are clean, user-friendly, and easy to work via the IR-D’s multifunction footswitches. These let you tackle channel switching, activate the effects loop, and supercharge either channel with customizable boosts. Included editing software also allows you to save and cue MIDI-based presets with storage for up to 128 programs — in other words, the customization gets granular! Ditch the amp and cab, and go direct with the powerful tube tones of the IR-D dual tube preamp and DI pedal from Sweetwater.

Custom channels with dual independent boosts

Each of the IR-D’s two channels is entirely independent and packed with fine-tuned controls. Players get per-channel 3-band EQ and independent boosts, so you can essentially play with four channels at all times. Each channel provides British-inspired tones with visceral detail and sensitivity tube response of Dave Friedman’s finest work. You can dial in mid-scooped rhythm tones on Channel 1, with a boosted mid-forward lead tone on Channel 2. And with a host of other per-channel tools, it’s just as easy to conjure up spanking cleans or tailor tones to any pickups or guitar. The duality makes this pedal a must-have device!

Rapid rig integration with every connection under the sun

The rear panel’s suite of connections helps you route signal and maintain ironclad control, especially onstage. The IR-D features an ultra-transparent series effects loop, and slotting your favorite time-based effects into the loop brings the brilliance and dimensions you’d expect from a head or combo. There’s also 5-pin MIDI, plus MIDI-capable USB for control as well as connecting to software such as third-party IR loaders. Lastly, a headphone output lets you use the IR-D for quiet after-hours practice or even recording! You can travel and gig with the IR-D for gigs while also making it your new favorite practice amp.

Convenient presets, IRs, and editing software

Smooth digital connectivity and IR loading make this pedal a hit with professionals who need exacting instant recall of intricate presets onstage. The IR-D’s editing software lets you manage IRs, adjust power amp simulations, and save up to 128 presets for instant recall via USB- or 5-pin MIDI. The IR-D ships with 13 of Dave Friedman’s favorite cabinet IRs, which can be independently assigned on a per-channel basis (the hardware lets you toggle between three IR selections at any time).

Already have an IR library you love? No problem! You can deactivate the pedal’s IR section and use it on your own. Conversely, you can bypass the preamp and use only the IRs should you need to work with a different preamp. Another possibility is using a live cabinet onstage while the IR-D’s IR output goes to a mixing board.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!

Reviews

Classy and addicting
Excellent cleans and crunch tones. All the reviews are accurate, this preamplifier is very touch sensitive and has wonderful overtones. Very inspiring to play. I'd definitely recommend this preamp and the IR-X too. I've both and their both different, and I enjoy them more than I did my AXE FX iii, it was great but I spent way too much time tinkering. Now I don't tinker I just play

Best amp in a box!!!
This unit does it all. From lush clean tones to rippin leads!! It's touch sensitive to your playing like no other. I've had all the line 6 modelers, tried fractal audio, owned acs1, etc. None of these beat this unit! For the price I think this unit is a steal. Don't think this unit is just for dirt tones because it can do low gain and mid gain tones! I definitely recommend this pedal for anyone looking for a slient option for the house or for live gigs
Perfect Classic Crunch with All the Features
I've been eyeing a Dirty Shirley for months, but I spend a lot of time practicing and recording at home. So a great direct sound is very important to me. I bought this unit the same week it was released and I could not be happier.
First, it absolutely NAILS the classic crunch tones. It's flexibility and features are all secondary to this. The sound is amazing whether you're running in to the DAW or effects of an amp.
Second, two identically voiced channels with multiple gain structures and and bright switch gives you a TwinSister at your feet. Then add a boost with volume and gain controlled separately for each channel and you've got everything you need.
I'm going to work with this setup for a while, see if I really NEED overdrives [ofc I will].
Third, my UA Lion and Ruby are up for sale. The IR-D sounds better for all my purposes and has a smoother top end than I've achieved with the UA pedals. Incredible pedals, too. Keeping the Dream, Starlight, and Golden.
Finally, yesterday's band practice was amazing. Ran this in to the effects loop of my Mesa Mark V in to Mesa 1x12 widebody cabinet. Freaking Nailed it. THE SOUND and FEEL that I've wanted from my rig for a long time.
Music background: Classic Rock, Indie, Post, Experimental
Friedman IR-D user review
I have had the unit for about 2 months now, so I feel confident in my views. Overall, it is a very musical pedal. I have used it live running direct into the house/church PA and recorded with it. The tone is great and with two separate channels with independent boost on each channel, it pretty much covers all the sonic territory you need. I ended up loading my own Celestion IR cab files, but that is me. Others may find the pre-loaded IR cabinet files are perfect for their tastes.
Pros: Really musical pedal with the trademark sweet organic gain Friedman is known for. Very versatile for seemingly a simple pedal. Fun to play.
Cons: Mono only output. LEDs are overly bright, especially the red boost LED. Makes reading the control lettering very difficult. Clean headroom is lacking when using humbuckers. Note: I understand this may not be an issue for many players.
Simple and amazing!
I've been searching for a good direct option for a while and this does the trick! I've used quite a few digital options but have been left wanting more. I give 4.5 star because they should had added a xlr out and a 1/4 inch out with defeat able IR like the NUX amp academy for those of us who want to run it to FOH and non ir to a cab. Took no time to get set up how I'd want to use an amp and the software is easy to use and change IR's. Powered off my Truetone power supply with no issues and was awesome at my gig this last weekend. This thing rocks! I used a JHS buffered splitter in my loop to go to my pedal baby and cab and added a direct box for foh.
Music background: Regular gigging musician.
