Saturate and enhance
The Overloud Gem VOICE kicks off its signal chain with its Mic Preamp, Tape Sim, and Enhancer modules. Offering four spot-on emulations of classic console preamps, the VOICE’s Mic Preamp module contains everything from crisp and transparent tones to saturated analog authenticity. The Tape Sim module delivers the vintage sound of magnetic tape, adding depth and realism, and it also offers a selection of tape sizes, speeds, and special effects. Next up, the Enhancer module accentuates the natural harmonic content of a vocal, adding presence and definition that will bring your singer to the forefront.
De-box and de-esser
The fourth module in the signal chain, Multiband, addresses the most common issues that plague vocal recordings: harsh sibilance and low-end frequency buildup. With two straightforward filters, De-box and De-esser, Multiband cuts mud and tames strident high end, leaving you with a clean vocal primed for further processing. A helpful Auto Cue function automatically solos the De-box or De-esser when you adjust a knob, which can help you hone in on offending frequencies.
Rein in dynamics and sculpt tone
The Overloud Gem VOICE’s Compressor module serves up five flavors of compression, including emulations of hardware FET, optical, and tube compressors, so you can match the style of dynamic processing to your recording. Additionally, the Compressor module includes an expander/gate for cutting unwanted noise and a low-frequency sensitivity knob to tailor how the compressor responds to low and high voices. Like the Mic Preamp module, the 4-band Equalizer module takes its cues from legendary recording console and hardware EQs. It features four distinct modules with shelving and peaking modes for the high and low bands and a band-limit model for creating telephone-style vocal effects.
Create depth and dimension
To add the final bit of polish to your vocals, the Overloud Gem VOICE includes the Space module, which provides a selection of modern multilayered impulses and classic reverb unit sounds. You can also deploy the Delay module for when you want to spice up your vocals with a slapback echo or longer repeats.
Graphic display provides visual feedback
The Overloud Gem VOICE provides real-time visual feedback with an easy-to-read graphic. Select between EQ and Comp views to visually analyze frequency dynamics information. While it’s always best to mix with your ears, being able to see the frequency spectrum is useful for quickly identifying unpleasant resonances — in EQ mode, you can adjust settings right from the graphic display. Comp view displays gain reduction level over time, showing you how the compressor is responding to peaks. If you’re just getting started with mixing, the Comp view can help you better understand how the different compressor settings affect a signal.
