Bright and spanky "Black Top" humbucking pickups

Gretsch uncovered a set of Baldwin-era Filter'Tron pickups with incredible punch and twang - perfect for the G5420T Electromatic single-cutaway hollowbody. They reverse engineered those special pickups to create the set of "Black Top" Filter'Tron humbucking pickups that you'll find loaded in this G5420T. With their robust character and trademark cut, the Gretsch Black Top Filter'Tron humbuckers keep you ready for everything from rockabilly and country to blues and classic rock.

Exceptionally flexible electronics

The Gretsch G5420T Electromatic allows you to pull off a lot of tonal tricks. Volume controls for each pickup help you create a perfect balance between warmth, bite, and brilliance when both pickups are engaged. The master tone control lets you fine-tune your sound once you've got the pickups dialed in. And thanks to the master volume control, you can take your tube amp from clean to growling without changing the balance between your pickups. And of course you'll get sweet tone from the neck and bridge pickups individually.

Smooth vibrato action

Nothing beats the character and vintage vibe that the Bigsby-style tailpiece adds to the G5420T Electromatic single-cutaway hollowbody. Based on the original design created by Paul A. Bigsby, the Bigsby Licensed B60G tailpiece requires next to no effort to use, making it particularly easy to pull off slow, subtle, and extended bends. You'll be able to bend into notes, give full chords vintage-sounding modulation, and imbue single notes with a character that isn't attainable through other setups. Sweetwater guitarists agree, a vibrato like this is part of the sound of Gretsch.

My First Gretsch

I've been playing for over 60 years. This is my first Gretsch. Played one at GC and liked it although the set up wasn't very good. They only had the demo and it was over a year old. Although they offered 10% off, I decided to pass. After talking to Luke at Sweetwater, I ordered one and the hard case to go with it. WOW! When I unpacked it, it was in perfect tune. After checking it out and playing it, I was blown away. Set up is just right and intonation is perfect. The Sweetwater 55 point Evaluation made all the difference in the world. Thanks to Luke and the other great folks at Sweetwater, I have a new favorite guitar. ( at least for a while) This guitar plays as good as it looks. Buy one and you'll see what I mean. Be sure to get the Gretsch hard case. It's a perfect fit.

Happy Customer

Very happy with my Gretsch from Sweetwater. It should be mentioned that Sweetwater takes their "Customer Service" very seriously. They really do care about you as a customer and work very hard to make you a loyal customer with them. Their follow up is exceptional. I purchase instruments from other large retailers The only reason why I did not give a 5 Star rating is because the rosewood fret board does not have a consistent color down the middle. This is a quality control issue with Gretsch not with Sweetwater. I also understand that it's an Electromatic entry-level guitar and not the "Vintage Select Edition". This is a minor cosmetic issue and maybe my tech person can darken it and make it look better, no big deal.

Now for something a bit different

Ok, so I'm really a Gibson and PRS guy. So this was a completely emotional buy. And I'm glad I did. This guitar has a very unique range of tone. It can jangle like a 12 or put it in front of a TS9 and it can growl. It took some getting used to, the size is very acoustic-like. But the neck has a very familiar feel and the adjustment needed in playing style is more than offset by the great tone. And the build quality on my example is terrific. So, no complaints, great looking instrument with a unique voice and quality that belies its price.
