Five Must-have Pedals in One!

Loaded with genuine SansAmp technology and armed with award-winning Tech 21 effects, the all-analog Fly Rig 5 offers a complete pedalboard's worth of stompbox power with extreme grab-and-go convenience. The pedalboard itself is broken down into three parts, but it houses a SansAmp pre, a Boost RVB reverb, a Boost DLA delay, and a Plexi amp-style overdrive with a separate switchable 21dB preamp boost - all for about 1/3 the space of the individual pedals put together! There are plenty of controls on the Fly Rig 5 for tone tweaking, and its robust design makes this all-in-one rig perfect for regular gigging.

Tech 21 Fly Rig 5 Guitar Multi-effects Pedal at a Glance:
  • Plexi section with switchable boost fires up your tone
  • SansAmp section comes complete with Boost RVB ambience
  • DLA section tops off your sound with vintage tape echo
Plexi section with switchable boost fires up your tone

The first thing your guitar signal hits as it enters the Tech 21 Fly Rig 5 is the smoking-hot Plexi distortion section. Based on Tech 21's Hot-Rod Plexi pedal, the Plexi section delivers 1968's most sought-after distortion. In addition to a classic single-knob tone control, this wooly and organic high-gain drive tone offers independent level and drive controls so you can contour your distortion so that it responds naturally to your playing dynamics. What's more, you can punch up your sound with up to 21dB of extra preamp gain by kicking in the Hot switch, adding the extra intensity you need to make your solos pop.

SansAmp section comes complete with Boost RVB ambience

With all of the awesome guitar pedals and processors you'll find at Sweetwater, the SansAmp lineage is one of the most universally respected names in amp modeling. That's why we were absolutely thrilled when Tech 21 put a classic SansAmp analog preamp at the heart of the Fly Rig 5. Pre-voiced for clean tones, this preamp delivers all of the warmth and dimension you'd expect from a vintage tube amp, and when you crank up the drive control, you'll be rewarded with a variable range of texture and overdrive. A 3-band EQ lets you dig into your tone, and an analog reverb based on the Boost RVB pedal provides you with a classic spring reverb sound that's so authentic, it'll have you looking for the reverb tank.

DLA section tops off your sound with vintage tape echo

A touch of delay is the perfect dash of seasoning to kick up your guitar tone, and the Fly Rig 5 more than delivers. The Fly Rig 5's DLA section is based on the popular Boost DLA vintage tape echo pedal. A range of between 28ms and 1,000ms dials in slap delays, long trailing ambiences, and anything in between. One of the coolest things about this delay section is the Drift control, which adds a dose of random modulation to enhance your sound. What's more, there's a dedicated tap tempo switch onboard, which makes it easy to adjust your delay timing on the fly.

Fly Rig 5 - Exactly what I was looking for!

My regular rig consists of some great pedals and a great tube combo amp (Dr. Z Maz 18jr NR 112 combo) and I also have a great sounding (and affordable) Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III. When I gig I always take both amps...sometimes I run in stereo (for my ears) and sometimes just to have the Hot Rod as a back up. Recently the Hot Rod developed a problem with the bright switch...mid gig of course and presented a huge nasty humming/buzzing sound. I was running the Dr. Z & Hot Rod in stereo that night. My band mates are pros and kept the groove going while I frantically traced down the issue, disconnected from the Hot Rod and jumped back in. I decided it was time to find a small, cost effective and great sounding alternative in case my amp went down or I'm playing a smaller venue and stage volume is an issue. Enter the Fly Rig 5. After much surfing the interwebs and YouTube I came across this little gem. Super simple, great sounding, super small and light and quite versatile. This thing is also super affordable. I've already used this for a couple recording projects running direct to Logic Pro X and rehearsals with my band running direct to the PA. Killer sound! I also play guitar on worship team at my church and other churches around town and stage volume is always a concern not to mention these days the majority of churches are using in ear monitors. The Fly Rig 5 shines in this use. Very friendly with pedals - I run a Boss TU-3 tuner and then into an Ibanez TS9 Mini, Joyo Tremolo and then into an Xotic SP Compressor right into Fly Rig 5. The SansAmp section sounds great, the Plexi overdrive is huge and I love the Boost feature! The on board Delay & Reverb are outstanding and very usable. My only niggle? I wish the unit was 9V rather than 12V so I only needed one power supply. That's a pretty minor gripe though as this Fly Rig 5 suits my needs perfectly.

Rule of Tone

I first saw and played through the Fly Rig 5 at NAMM 2014. I write a music performance/technical column for the San Diego Troubadour magazine and I highly recommended it to my readers back then. At the time, I was playing and performing strictly acoustic and even though the Fly Rig is very reasonably priced, I couldn't justify spending the $$$ until recently when I began playing electric guitar again. I am accustomed to playing through a killer-sounding Boogie MKIV but I really got tired of the weight of the Boogie and its roadcase as well as almost never being able to turn it up to it's sweet-spot without being too loud. Now, I use a brown/wheat Princeton and the Fly Rig 5. The tone rules! I can get everything from "Fender Clean" to "Marshall Dirty" with all of the subtle and hard to achieve semi-clean/semi-dirty tones in between. This rig 'sounds' loud and more importantly, "feels" loud but isn't. I can play all of the touch-sensitive things that you'd expect from a Boogie (or Dumble) without the weight, volume, or expense. Really! The Fly Rig would be worth it if it stopped there, but with the excellent delay/modulation section included, it definitely has the "Rule of Tone" in it's circuits.

The Real Deal !!

Short & to the point - this thing works !! In fact, it works so well, I played a gig last week AMP-LESS. Yes, No AMP. Pedal board was wireless receiver, wah, chorus, fly rig and then straight into the mixer to the PA. Worked like a charm and 40 less lbs I had to transport. I tested it during a break at a gig recently (practically nobody there), cranked this thing up, and the Plexi sound was incredible. I never dreamed this thing would sound as great as it does, but trust me, it does. And, it's even smaller than the photo suggests. I was considering the Line 6 HD500 but so glad I went with this - much simpler, and I have other pedals. Buy it - you'll be glad you did.

Perfect in every way...

This ledal is a must have for anyone not wanting to lug a massive rig to Gigs, or you want a pedal direct that sounds like a tube amp! No kidding! It's got the nuance of micro compression that Tubes Produce. I was blown away! I had an outdoor gig a week ago, and I didn't want to lug my tube amp and full pedal rig out there in the cold, so I grabbed my fly rig 5... Well, I get out there thinking that it would be ok, as I had not really taken time to delve into this hidden treasure pedal, I mean how good can a modeler pedal sound right??? Wrong! This thing sounded so good, the sound guy looked up at me and said, "Man, your tone is better than the other amps on stage, it's so clear and full!" I said, "Fly rig 5!" Now, let me mention a little glorious extra. I happened to have a Tech 21 Power engine 60 power amp. I had changed out the speaker to an eminence Cannabis rex about a year ago, and being on stage I knew I needed a personal monitor for the guitar tone as the stage monitors were tiny. I did not have my in ears, so I grabbed the power engine. Fly rig into the power engine, and out of power engine direct to mixer as power engine has a direct pass xlr out to board. My tone was so good, I went back to my main rig and removed my tube amp and massive pedalboard, put the flly rig into place, using my power engine as my monitor, and then direct to house. So light, so easy, and so affordable! P.S. I am a huge Fan of visual sound pedals like open road overdrive and son of hyde distortion....These pair perfectly with the fly rig! All analog, all day, all good! Get one right now!

Absolutely Amazing!!!

I just can'y stop playing it. The tones are amazing. I have compared this unit against my collection of overdrive / distortion stomp boxes as well as against a variety of tube amps and this unit does not disappoint. Just freaking inspiring, thats all I can say!!!
