Massive Octave and Overdrive for Bass Guitar

Red Witch's first bass stompbox, the Factotum overdrive/octave pedal, delivers an all-analog overdrive and sub-octave effect in a shiny chrome package. Voiced to keep your low end huge, the Red Witch Factotum is a bass player's dream come true. Dual footswitchable effects let you add overdrive and a sub-octave effect to your bass rig. Use them separately or use them together for a massive sound. The unique Red Witch Factotum bass overdrive/octave effect pedal delivers massive tone-sculpting effects that won't kill your bass's low end!

Red Witch Factotum Bass Overdrive and Sub Octave Effects Pedal at a Glance:
  • Earth-rattling sub-octave effect
  • An overdrive optimized for bass
  • True-bypass design for pure tone
Earth-rattling sub-octave effect

The Red Witch Factotum's sub-octave effect adds an extra octave note, one octave lower, to your playing. An Octave Mix control lets you dial in the sub-octave effect from subtle to completely wet. An independent on/off switch gives you complete control of when the octave effect is added to your sound. Add massive low end to your sound with the Red Witch Factotum.

An overdrive optimized for bass

The uniquely-voiced Overdrive section of the Red Witch Factotum was designed to retain the low end of your bass signal. The Drive control takes the overdrive from subtle to massive grind. If you play punk, garage rock, or any style that needs a fat and articulate bass overdrive, then the Red Witch Factotum is for you. An independent on/off switch lets you use the overdrive section by itself or combined with the octave effect.

True-bypass design for pure tone

When not in use, the Red Witch Factotum's true bypass design takes it completely out of your signal chain. It doesn't run your signal through the entire pedal, but directly from the input to the output. This keeps your signal pure, and your precious tone unaffected. We're big fans of true-bypass pedals at Sweetwater. The Red Witch Factotum is awesome even when it is turned off!

Very usable and tone friendly pedal

I bought both the Zeus Bass Fuzz Sub-Octave and the Factotum at the same time and whilst they are very different pedals, they both sound great. The Factotum is a bit less 'in your face' than the Zeus, but like the Zeus, the sub octave is analog and very usable. I find I dont have to dial in all that much for it to be noticeable, so I tend to use it around 8 or 9 o clock, and that's plenty. The drive is very tweakable. I prefer a darker drive so I leave the tone rolled back around 10 o clock and run about 12 o clock or less on the gain. It adds a nice warmth and depending on what amp/bass I adjust the mix to suit. The effects stack very nicely when you use both sides of the pedal together. Both the Zeus and the Factotum are essential on my pedal board.

Sweet Distortion, "Eh" Sub-Octave

The Bad: The analog Sub-Octave circuit performs about like I anticipated. It tracks great on notes above D, but below that, it tends to hunt and search a bit to find the right pitch. It's also more noticeable on sustained notes than on staccato. I also wish the Sub-Oct have a little more control than just "Mix". The other Bad is "price". In my opinion, $350 is a lot to pay for a pedal. At that price, it better be freaking awesome. The Good: The Drive circuit rocks. Hard. I looked for a long time to find a bass distortion tone that I loved. Factotum has it. I play in a punk and in a surf band. Drive is now "Always On" with the punk band and occasionally on when playing Surf. And when I want a little extra "Evil", I click on the Sub-Octave. Bottom Line: $350 is a lot of money. Sweetwater gave me 30 days to audition the pedal and return it for a full refund if I wasn't happy. There was a period I considered returning it, but decided to keep it instead and in the end, consider it money well spent.
