Pleasantly surprised

I must admit...I bought the Blackstar guitar mini and loved it. So, I decided to get the bass unit. Couldn't believe how much of a bass response you get from such a small unit. Worth every penny.

Seemed too good to be true...but wasn't!

I picked this up because I wanted a simple, portable practice amp; something I could pipe tunes into and play along with through earbuds (1/8" headphone jack! Woohoo!), or something just loud enough to make my Fender Kingman ABG heard. Nothing crazy, just something to fill out the sound. Something that could fit in my gig bag that wasn't just solely a headphone amp. I hemmed and hawed over whether to opt for the single amp or the paired amp and extension cabinet. I figured I'd use the extension once and then it'd wind up in a drawer somewhere. But, it also added the AC adapter with the extension, so I figured it'd negate the added cost of buying the adapter separately anyway. Even without an adapter, it'll run on AAs.So, as you're most likely doing right now, I read as many reviews and as possible and watched some YouTube reviews as well before dropping the hammer and buying it. I was still skeptical because all of the reviews seemed to have the amp mic'd, so I figured what I was hearing couldn't possibly be true or accurate. It was. More than I ever could have imagined. Without even getting into the volume aspect, what this little amp packs for features and sound shaping is astonishing. OD, Sub, Compression, etc. It just SOUNDS great. The headphone jack kicks out an emulated tone, and I've been using it to record directly into GarageBand. The compression is great, and the sub, which one wouldn't suspect would make ANY difference in a 3" speaker, is an amazing bonus. So yeah, the volume. Though a total of 6 watts with both cabinets, the little guy really packs a punch. I have yet to turn it up all the way, because really, that's not what it's for. No, it will not be heard over a drummer who isn't playing with hot rods or brushes. Remember, it's 6 watts through two 3" speakers, albeit VERY efficient 3" speakers. I've played through it with a G&L SB-2, Yamaha BB424x, and Fender Kingman ABG. I've read that they handle a low B with nary a whimper. The lowest I've gone is D and it's incredibly full.Oh! And it also makes for a great stereo reference monitor setup. I have each speaker flanking my laptop, and the fidelity is surprisingly good. The bass response is great, of course. But the top end is surprisingly good as well..

It's not a toy

To be honest, I expected a toy, or a gimmick, but I like that kinda stuff, so I was OK with it. I was wrong. I hooked up the additional cabinet, used the power supply, and plugged in a fretless bass. WOW. I expected the speakers to break up and leave me flat. Not so. The sound was clear and the volume was perfect for late night practice. The 'sub' knob adds more depth to the sound and the gain gives a little distortion, but all my tone came through. Be sure that you cannot use these to practice with your band or anything like that, but they are perfect for quiet practice. Great for when that 'idea' hits you in the middle of the night, and you have to hear it through an amp. Again, surprisingly clear sound for 3 inch speakers. I'd buy these again if they were stolen.

Works A Treat!

What I wanted was a good set of computer speakers that I could also play bass through while learning bass lessons and song tutorials online. So I took a chance and ordered these blind, and I'm so glad I did! They most surely work a treat for their intended purpose. They sound much better as computer speakers than I anticipated. Very rich tone with pretty bottom end. The vocals are superb: clear; clean & powerful. Playing bass along with music actually sounds better than the bass alone. Reasonable expectations are key to appreciation. Remember this is a 3 watt amp into a 3 inch speaker in a little plastic box, and not a fire breathing 800 watt stage monster. As you might expect the speaker as full range as it is, isn't a woofer. It produces mostly midrange and does so quite well. The EQ control is a midrange cut/boost affair centered around 400Hz, and is more than just a little quirky. The compressor is best left at a low setting as is the sub-harmonic generator. They can make things real muddy real fast. A little goes a long way. The O.D. is not worth mentioning other than it cuts all the lows out. The Fly 3 Bass Pack is almost an experiment in acoustic science in a box. Listen to the main unit alone. Now add the extension 'cabinet'. HUGE difference! So you can readily hear what doubling your wattage and speakers is all about. Yes, science! Now stack them up and hear the advantage of 'the coupling effect' of identical stacked drivers. You get and hear an immediate increase in the bottom end, and in something this small it is most welcome acoustic gift indeed.

It Works!

I purchased this combo so that I would have a very compact alternative to my other bass rigs. I used it at a blue grass / old timey jam with six other musicians playing acoustically. It held its own and sounds pretty good. If it had a bit more power and punch it would be great!
Music background: Been playing for forty six years professionally and for fun.
