Used on Jim Kelly amps!

The new Jim Kelly amps use this same exact speaker. And if you ever heard a Jim Kelly amp.....you'd be impressed that they use this speaker. I've been playing guitar for over 40 years now, and there are only a few speakers that have ever really impressed me. That would be the Pre-Rola Celestions from the 60's and the EVM 12L speakers. The EVs just have a tone that often reminds me of a 1959 Fender Bassman. It might be a woody tone. Anyways, you just have to listen to them to "get it".

Great for harmonica, Rio Santa Cruz

My cube 60 has an EV 12". I use it for harmonica. This is the best amp I have ever used. Rio Santa Cruz I have used this for 30 years. A little heavy but worth it.

Superior Guitar Speaker

I replaced the stock speaker in my Fender Concert II (Rivera) amp with the EVM 12L (I believe an EV speaker was an upgrade option for the Rivera-Era Fender Concert II's in the '80s but my amp had a stock Fender speaker). This was the best tone upgrade I ever made to my sound through this amp. The amp is now clear and articulate. All the bell chime and twang of my Fender Stratocaster comes through. I also play a Gibson ES 335 and Flying V and the unique tone of each guitar projects beautifully with this speaker. Gibson ES 335 has a very thick tone that can overwhelm lesser speakers, even at low volume. With the EVM 12L every note comes through crystal clear at every volume. The Q-Tron I use sounds much better with a speaker than can handle the wah whoops and blurps. I have no problem cutting through the mix and the amp has more volume overall. With high gain there is no speaker break-up that I can hear, just the tube overdrive and whatever effects I'm using, which is fine with me. I play funk, acid-jazz, blues and classic rock, mostly in small bars and clubs. This speaker provides plenty of volume and has given my Fender Concert II a new life. The speaker is heavy, so my 1x12" 60 watt amp now feels like it is made of rock. For me, this is a small and expected trade-off. I really like this speaker and I plan to get another EVM 12L for my 1 x 12" Mesa Boogie Lone Star.
Music background: Regular Club Gigging for 25+ years

I'm writing this review after playing on a pair of EVM12L's in a Mesa Lonestar 2x12 for about 40 hours, so the speakers are not fully broken in. My initial reaction is how amazingly flat these are, just like classic EV12Ls, and how they really let the amp show through. They also keep even tonal character through a wide range of volume levels. Of course, rated a 200w, these speakers are best for those not looking for speaker breakup. As should be expected, they are heavy, so if you are a working musician carrying a lot of gear, be aware of this. Overall, I think these are absolutely some of the best speakers available, for live use or studio recording.
