The EMG 85 might be one of the best kept secrets as far as bridge humbuckers go. It's best known as a neck pickup used in conjunction with an 81, but don't let that fool you. Active pickups have a reputation for being "sterile," but that word does not describe any part of the 85's sound. The design of this pickup is brilliant in that it emphasizes the lower mids while cutting the upper treble frequencies and keeping the bass under control. Because of this, it is perfect for creating a powerful, warm sound that never becomes piercing or flubby. It is a great fit for overly bright, trebly guitars. Also, thanks to the increased output of the 85, the signal hits the front end of the amp harder than a passive signal would. This enables the gain on the amp to be turned down while achieving the same amount of distortion, except that this distortion is clearer. The fluidity of lead tones with the 85 is second to none. Another great feature of the 85 is that it cleans up surprisingly well. The volume knob has a full, controlled sweep that's great for controlling the distortion level by manipulating the volume control. In addition, it does not lose treble when the volume is rolled back. I purchased a pair of these pickups (bridge and neck) for a 2014 Gibson Les Paul Classic that sounded painfully harsh and lacked sustain. The result was stunning. These pickups transformed what was my worst sounding guitar into my go-to instrument for classic rock, modern rock, and metal. I can't recommend this pickup enough. Fair warning, though: it is on the dark side of things in the neck position. an EMG 60/60A might be a better match for an 85 bridge if a cutting neck pickup tone is what you're after.
