Next-gen Guitar Strings

Ernie Ball Cobalt guitar strings are made of a new alloy formulation that gives you higher output, better sound, and longer life. Cobalt strings' special iron/cobalt blend attracts the magnets in your pickups better than any other alloy. When you string up with Ernie Ball Cobalts, you'll immediately notice the incredible comfort these strings offer - silky and pliable under your fretting fingers; your pick will seem to glide over the strings, letting you execute fast passages effortlessly. And when you plug in, you'll get increased power, beefy yet defined lows, improved midrange focus, harmonics, and sustain, and crisp highs. Try a set of Ernie Ball Cobalt strings - you're gonna love 'em!

Beta tested by the creme de la creme

In the development of their Cobalt strings, Ernie Ball tapped select members of their star-studded artist roster - including Steve Morse, John Petrucci, Randy Jackson, Tony Levin, and Slash - to be beta testers for the new formulation. John Petrucci reported that the Cobalts sound "amazing," with "increased power, incredible clarity, and incredible sonic balance." He noted that the Cobalts seem "softer" under your fretting fingers (the term he used was "buttery"). Slash noted that - before being plugged in - the Cobalts "have an entirely different feel than normal strings." He goes on to characterize this sensation as "bouncy and pliable," and "a lot of fun for bending." When amplified, Slash commented that the Cobalts were just as bright as titanium strings, but more "guttural," with more "growl to them."

Cobalt formula gives you higher output and better sound

A half century ago, Ernie Ball practically invented "rock" guitar strings. And now, with Cobalt, they've re-invented them. After exhaustive testing of over 350 alloy combinations, the company ended up with an optimal formula that - as compared with conventional strings - gives you higher output, beefier lows with increased definition, improved midrange focus, shimmering harmonics and more robust sustain. You get a brighter sound without inducing harshness by turning up the treble on your amp.

Cobalts last longer

Ernie Ball Cobalt guitar strings last longer, retaining their brightness long after other strings have given up the ghost. Steve Morse reported having a set on one of his guitars "for several weeks," and with daily use - "sweaty hands" and all - the Cobalts "still sound bright... They just don't have that dead sound," he says. So, with higher output, better sound, and the monetary benefits of not having to change strings so often, Cobalts have it all over traditional alloy formulations. Check out a set of Ernie Ball Cobalt strings - you'll love 'em!

Best advance in strings since the 60's

I had used XL's forever and every time I tried something new to see if it was worthy of changing I always wound up coming back, but these changed all that. The difference in tone was not subtle it was very dramatic. Increased Harmonics and sympathetic overtones just suddenly started appearing everywhere without any change in playing style. I thought I had come to a new level of playing prowess but when I switched back to the XL's they were all gone. I was convinced, lesson learned. These strings do not just reproduce sound they actually speak their own language and while they will not make you a better player you will shocked at how much better your playing sounds with them on. They will breath new life into songs you have been playing for 20 years, I do not concur with the report that they do not play smoothly under your fingers as I find them quite silky and effortless to play and the heavier gauge feels much lighter to the touch. Big bonus to the low end on these. They make my guitar sound Like a baritone. Power chords and walking bass lines are incredibly lush and tooth rattling with effortless sustain without the use of vibrato. Their durability will also offset the added cost and they are NOT COATED!. I am hard on strings and I can get a full week of gigs out of them. The XL's would only give me 2-3 nights. Been playing for over 35 years, IMHO worth every penny. I won't play anything else in my lifetime...

Switch made!

I was a believer the moment I started playing these strings. Could tell right away, across the ENTIRE frequency spectrum, the improvement was obvious. The feel is a little different, coming from D'Addario XL's, but I have gotten used to it; the improvement in tone alone make a difference.

All the new cobalt strings have almost a silky feel to them which I really like especially if you're into bending/pinch harmonics and the metal tone these strings create is amazing. Use these with any active pickup and you're going to hear, feel and love the difference. Rock on Friends!

Cobalt STHB for lyfe

Contrary to the other review, I found these to be about the most comfortable strings I've ever played. They don't take as long to break in, add a ton of good color to the tone, and bend very very nicely. I don't see myself using anything else for a long time

Great strings

Loved the strings. Sound great, play smooth and all the jazz they say they do. Djenty metal metal town.
Music background: 12 years of guitar playing everything from finger-style acoustic to death metal.
