Frightening vocal clarity

The other reviewers seem to have hit the nail on the head. These are clean, smooth, loud, well-built speakers worth more than what they sell for. Instead of re-iterating what others have said, I'll try to provide useful information in the form of use-based comparisons: For use as wedges: -QSC: the more sound you push through K and KW series 1x12's, the harsher they get. The DSR112 remains clear until arriving at a volume which has no use in stage monitoring. -JBL: anything PRX, MRX, and lower lines are blown out of the water. The 112 has smoother highs, smoother lows, more headroom, less distortion, etc., and no comparison is worthwhile. The new SRX line is an extension of the PRX line, not an improvement upon the old. The old SRX712m (now basically the STX812m) may, to some ears, outperform the DSR thanks to a slightly tighter low end, but to others the flawless translation of vocals offered by the DSR will help it win out. The only JBL wedge my ears prefer is the F series, which costs many times more. -Mackie: my ears have never enjoyed the sound of Mackie anything, so I'll reserve comment. -EAW: I find the DSR easier to mix on than EAW wedges of similar spec thanks to more consistent highs Basically, until I can afford half a dozen of the JBL F12 or Clair 12am, these are what I will buy for monitoring. Main PA: There's one similarly-sized box I prefer as a main speaker, but it's made by Meyer; if you could afford it, you probably wouldn't be reading this. If I could afford it, I probably wouldn't be writing this. As I mentioned earlier, the old JBL SRX, new JBL STX 1x12 designs have, to my ears, a slightly tighter bass sound. That said, this does not take effect until frequencies below where I normally cross over to my subs, so I didn't really consider it important for my purposes. I cannot get over the vocal clarity provided by these speakers. Push an SM58 through these, and it will perform about as well as an e945 or OM5 through a lesser speaker. The other night I had a KSM8 on stage with DSR mains. When I heard the lead singer for the first time, I reached up to take off my cue headphones only to realize that I had already done so. No other PA has ever done that to me. The crossover is as transparent as any I've ever heard. DJ's and people new to mixing bands will appreciate the D Contour switch. Experienced engineers who already know how to compensate for the non-linear relationship our ears have with volume and frequency will want to keep this feature disengaged, as we can do ourselves to every channel what it just does to the output mix. Personally, I think using it muddies up the mid range, which is the crow jewel of this box. Don't pass up a ridiculous value just because you see a Yamaha logo but have a leftover impression of what that means from listening to a Club Series PA. These are serious boxes, no doubt with some sprinkling of knowledge from Nexo involved in their design and production. Unless you eventually have rider acceptability to consider, you won't ever "outgrow" these.

Small but mighty

I bought these for outdoor gigs. I own some DXR15 cabs and the horns were a little weak for outdoors. These 2" horns are just what I was looking for. I'm using these with 2 passive JBL 18" subs. They have been fine for some of the wineries and smaller outdoor venues. Indoors, I have to dip eq in the upper midrange and highs. Great service and a good price from Sweetwater!

Best MI grade powered box, period

The DSR112 is hands down the best MI grade powered 12" and 2" inch box I've heard or used. It gets stupid loud, tear your face off loud in fact, is VERY stable feedback wise for a wedge and has great sound and coverage. Yamaha / Nexo did an excellent job on this box. Weight wise they are not bad and the finish is excellent, very durable and holds up amazing. Major thumbs up on the durability of the finish guys. I'd love to see them offer a real pro grade cover option, the slip covers they sell are horrible, they should be fully enclosed and DURABLE for guys who gig these things on a pro level. I own 12 of these boxes and I'm planning to add more to inventory. Yamaha are you listening ? pro covers that are fully enclosed with grill protection & velcro, no zippers! My suggestions for a second gen version of this box or series would be, a rota-table or a narrow coverage horn option for arraying them. Also the ability to mirror them for wedges, and maybe adding power-con in and through, and foam backing the grille for a more pro look for corporate audio would really step this up to a serious pro grade little *** kicker. Sound and output wise I wouldn't change a thing honestly. Maybe also doing a coax wedge version would be a really cool thing, something similar to a rcf nx12sma or nx15sma , or micro wedge territory... None the less, great box, you won't be let down if you buy it. Yamaha make a gen 2 and i'll buy a bunch and I'm confident others will to. Cheers! Nick -

Wow!!

Just received 2 of these speakers with 2 of the DSR118W subs. We had in our church the Bose MA12 with M4 bass modules. We did a side by side comparison using our X32 system and there is no comparison. Without touching the EQ on the system the DSR112 brought our music to life. Everytime we panned back to the Bose it sounded like our music was covered under a blanket. The vocals sound clear and balanced. Our drum cymbals,...let's just say we can now hear our drum cymbals clearly. The subs WOW!!! Clear, precise and powerful. This was definitely an upgrade. It's clear at low volume and wow is it clear when you crank up the volume. These things love high volume. The plan for our church was to wait to use them until after the New Year but our pastor loved them so much that he asked for us to install them now. The experience with Sweetwater's customer service, (Wayne), was so good it made the overall transition that much better. Thanks guys over at Sweetwater and if you're skeptical or looking to upgrade your PA's these are great!!! I highly recommend these to any and all.
