Handcrafted by Martin's world-class luthiers, the D-35 Seth Avett Custom Signature Edition acoustic-electric guitar is truly a tribute to custom shop craftsmanship. With its dreadnought body and solid premium tonewood construction, the D-35 Seth Avett is a very loud but superbly balanced cannon. Factory installed Martin Gold Plus electronics

Many acoustics - and yes, even some premium quality instruments - come with optional electronics packages or even "off-the-shelf" units, which can save some money, but ultimately compromise the amplified sound. For the D-35 Seth Avett Custom Signature Edition, Martin luthiers carefully selected a Martin Gold Plus system that would be factory installed in the guitar. This results in an amazingly detailed amplified sound that's never harsh or brittle sounding.

The Martin dreadnought is a cornerstone of modern music

In the early part of the twentieth century, the history of the modern guitar began. Martin's early dreadnoughts set into motion the guitar's prominent role in modern music and set the standard for tone quality in acoustic guitars. Martin dreadnoughts became known for resonant warm tones, quality craftsmanship, and tasteful styling. For those reasons, Martin guitars became an important part of the music written and performed by the stars of the '20s and '30s. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Martin D-35 Seth Avett

Currently, I play 5 different Martins. Two of them, my GPCPA1 Plus (Richlite fretboard and bridge and East Indian Rosewood back and sides) and GPCPA1 Custom (Ebony fretboard and bridge and Cocobolo back and sides) sound almost identical, but I need both of them for stage work due to different tunings. After playing my D-35 Seth Avett for about 5 minutes in a guitar store, I bought it, because it sounded sonically similar to my CS-GP-14, only slightly louder and it was about twice cheaper than the CS-GP-14. True, it does not have the huge bottom end of my CEO-8, but the mids are about the same and the highs are stronger! In a nutshell, if I can play only one of my current 5 Martins in all different live and studio situations, it would be my D-35 Seth Avett.

Seth Avett D35

Thanks to CJ Rich and his youtube review. Hearing the contrast in tone between his HD35 and the Seth Avett D35 helped me in my decision making process. This is an up scale Dreadnought with all the extra's. 1.75" nut, built in electroncs and beautiful eye candy details add visual appeal. Unbelievable crisp but full bodied tones. A great companion for my Martin D Junior. I am very pleased with this Sweetwater purchase.

Martin D-35 Seth Avett review

I've had my D-35 Seth Avett for about 4 months now, and I am still wowed every time I play it. This has become my #1 guitar to play, and I have some nice guitars giving it competition - Martin D18, Martin OM-21, Martin 000-17sm, Martin HD16r, Taylor 816, Taylor 812 - all fantastic guitars and I'd be happy with any one of them as my only guitar. But the tone of the D-35 is what I have come to love as "mine." I wanted the Seth Avett model over the standard D-35 primarily for the 1 3/4" nut, but the tone is definitely "better" than the standard D-35 to my ear. The standard model has more mid-range scoop, whereas the Seth Avett seems to be more balanced/smooth. The Avett still has plenty of bass though. If you've played a standard D-35 locally and expect the Seth Avett to arrive sounding identical, you may be in for a surprise. In my case, it was a great surprise that I am very happy with, but try to compare the tone between the two models if at all possible so you know what to expect. The workmanship is outstanding and the playability from the factory and/or Sweetwater's initial setup is perfect. I didn't even tweak the truss rod. The koa wedge is a beautiful detail, and the copper snowflake inlays have really grown on me. Like many other reviewers, I was unsure about them before I received the guitar, but in person they look really nice. I replaced the Tusq saddle with bone, but I can't say it made much of a noticeable improvement like I have heard with some other guitars. It's an easy/cheap thing to experiment with, but probably unnecessary on this guitar. I'll probably switch back to Tusq on my next string change just to see if I notice any difference at all going back. I don't use the electronics often, but I will say the sound of this pickup seems very transparent. I had to buy a cable with volume control built-in as this pickup offers no controls in the soundhole. That would be about my only complaint. When turning the volume up/down, the pickup is so transparent that at lower volumes, you sometimes have a hard time telling if you're hearing the guitar or the amplified signal. It's quite nice plugged in.

This is a beautiful guitar and it sounds amazing. This is the first upper end acousitc guitar I have owned and I will have to say the quality shows in apperance and in sound. I was a little concerned about the frest markers not being in the standard positons I was used to but those worries were unfounded. I highly recomment this guitar if you are wanting ta quality instrument that has a different look than the standard model.

Beautiful guitar. I have owned several Martins, D42, D40FMG, 000-28EC, D42 Koa, HD-28, and this one is one of the best. sounding. Very bright and loud with a well balanced sound. Works very well in alternate tunings when I am playing John Fahey, Chris Proctor, etc. The customer service from Jim Watson was great. Received my guitar in three days and the set up was perfect. Highly recommend Sweetwater.
