Sequencing has long been the most significant architectonic force of rhythm, structure, and order in Eurorack synthesis, supplying a malleable framework to build your sound. Now, via the Catalyst Sequencer, 4ms has reimagined the way we interface with sound and structure. This Eurorack module supplies a galvanizing blend of classic clocked-step sequencing and an unorthodox phase-based sequencer that has Sweetwater’s synthesists eager to deploy. Outfitted with eight dedicated outputs, the Catalyst Sequencer simultaneously accommodates CV and Gate signals throughout its 64-step capacity. Phase-based sequencing, however, utilizes the phase values of the incoming waveform to drive the behavior of the sequencer, irrespective of the channels starting step or length. Ramp-up signals move the sequence forward, while the inverse moves them backward. What about a triangle wave? That will result in a seamless ping-pong movement, and complex waveforms will evoke equally complicated patterns that can be used to break continuity or imbue your performances with a nuanced, controlled chaos. In addition to detailed management of CV output values, variable transposition options, channel-based behavioral adjustments, and flexible quantization, the Catalyst Sequencer features a horizontal Phase Scrub slider to manually move through your sequence, perfect for hands-on adjustments in live performances or studio jams.

Detail and versatility abound throughout the Catalyst Sequencer, offering near-limitless configurations of its 8-channel, 64-step architecture across CV and Gate signals, offering simultaneous, multi-module management of rhythms, leads, and more. The module’s range of musicality starts with its variable CV-output range, operating from –5V to +10V, out of the box, but this can be painlessly switched to ±5V, as well as capped at +5V, +3V, or +1V. Moreover, CV outputs can be quantized to a range of common scales, yet 4ms gives you an unquantized option with a precise, sub–1mV resolution. Flexible transposition options include both global and per-channel changes, with the onboard Randomizer capable of channel-specific randomization parameters for channel and gate values. Plus, sequencer momentum can be adjusted for each step of its expansive range to perform with glissando or ratcheted gating.
Chaos, control, and total transformation
Bear with us here, but there’s more to this game-changing sequencer than you might imagine. In fact, through holding down a specific combination of buttons, the Catalyst Sequencer transforms into an entirely different module: the Catalyst Controller. Each module shares this dual functionality, and if you decide you like one more than the other, you can even remove the faceplate, flip it over, and re-install it, thanks to the double-sided artwork that features the necessary visuals for both modules.
