APC Mini Update

Out of the box, this unit lacks Session Overview, which was a huge design/marketing error. However, a free Midi Remote (Controller) Script has been released by Isotonik Studios, which adds Session Overview functionality to the device, and with that caveat, I give this unit 5 Stars - it becomes a very powerful device for clip launching, especially for those who organize their clips in banks.

Works Great

This is a nice controller. It synced right to Ableton flawlessly, and I'm sure you can get better for more money, but if all you need it for is launching clips in a live situation than this will do just fine for you. The faders feel pretty nice, and allow for a tactile mixing flow if you use Ableton in that regard. Don't expect any easy integration with other DAW's just yet, it doesn't have any presets in things like FL Studio, like the APC 40 does, but I'm sure the mapping templates will come in due time, since this is such a new product. This controller has that quality Akai feel at the same price as the Launchpad Mini, and although I am pretty new to Ableton, it worked great for me. The incremental track switching in session view may be bothersome for some, but I find I can get around fast enough in this fashion, plus there may be a future fix to this since the 6th and 7th buttons down on the right edge have no current shift assignments, fingers crossed!!

great for what it is

a lot of people seem to be bitching about this instrument. i have one for use with my macbook pro, and it's terrific. very easy to navigate… unless you're stupid. faders are a great idea. the only drawback is that the button matrix can't match the actual color of the clips onscreen. awesome for sketching out ideas in a hurry!

not quite there...

nice idea, just done cheaply. the multi-function faders are cool, but the whole thing is just too fiddly. i kept mine for about two weeks, and it just got in the way more than it contributed to production. of course, don't use this on-stage. i wish akai would get it together… they're really slipping.

So near and yet so far

This unit was almost a Launchpad killer. It would get 5 stars, except for a major design flaw. You can't select banks for your 8x8 matrix like you can on Push and Launchpad; the shift/arrows simply move it by track/scene incrementally, which is worthless in Session Mode (since clip selection is performed directly on the matrix. In addition, the latter function can be handled on the computer keyboard, where there is no option for selecting banks, either in Midi, Keyboard, or even ClyphX, Nice try, Akai, but somebody REALLY screwed this up....
