Modern EVH Tube Tone with a British Flair

The 5150 Iconic Series combo delivers two channels of tube-fueled, EVH-style tone with a streamlined design that satisfies the needs of gigging and recording guitarists alike. This tube combo is geared toward Edward Van Halen's latter-day hard rock tones. That said, its EL34-fueled power section gives it a British-infused voice that classic Van Halen aficionados will appreciate. There's plenty of sound shaping onboard, with per-channel Gain and Volume, a shared 3-band EQ, and global Resonance and Presence controls. What's more, this amp's custom-designed EVH Celestion speaker and tailor-built cabinet produce pristine cleans and articulate high-gain tones with ample low-end response. The 5150 Iconic Series combo also includes a top-shelf noise gate, footswitchable Boost function, and high-quality reverb to ensure a dynamic performance and U.S.-prime, grade-A-stamped sound. Other features include a power reduction circuit, speaker-emulated output, dual parallel speaker outputs, selectable impedance, and an excellent-sounding effects loop. Brimming with modern EVH aesthetics, the 5150 Iconic Series combo delivers the searing tone and growling gain that King Edward made famous.

EL34s for the brown sound

The 5150 Iconic Series is tailor-made for modern EVH crunch. But when you need that thick, sustaining tone that Ed made famous on Van Halen's 1978 debut, you need to turn to this 5150 Iconic Series combo. What really sets this amp apart from the rest of the range is its EL34-based power amplifier. EL34s have much of the tone of the great British rock amps of the '70s and '80s. This amp nails those timbres with ease, adding a level of sag and saturation that feels and sounds great. And it will still get dirty with the best of modern metal machines.

Two channels of tube-fueled EVH tone

The 5150 Iconic Series combo is voiced with two ECC83 preamp tubes and fueled by two EL34 power tubes, arming you with two channels of muscular hard rock firepower. Each of this tube combo's channels includes two voices: a Green channel for crystalline cleans or overdriven crunch; and a Red channel for fiery leads with a blistering-hot Burn setting. Each channel includes independent Gain and Volume controls for easy level matching, along with a shared 3-band EQ for effortless sonic sculpting. Global Resonance and Presence knobs round out the 5150 Iconic Series combo's tone-shaping controls.

Chock-full of must-have features

Despite its streamlined design, the EVH 5150 Iconic Series combo is a gig-ready rock machine. Channel two includes a built-in noise gate, which effectively — and transparently — attenuates hiss and hum. The guitarists here at Sweetwater are impressed by this gate's responsiveness. You can churn out rapid staccato riffs all day long with zero noise between notes, and you can play long, sustaining passages without chopped-off notes. Channel two boasts a footswitchable Boost function that adds another 10dB to your signal to keep your solos front and center. The 5150 Iconic Series combo features a smooth-sounding reverb, which injects your playing with depth and dimension. You get a power reduction circuit for stadium-sized tones at bedroom-appropriate volumes, a speaker-emulated output for easy DI-ing, and dual parallel speaker outputs for no-fuss expansion. You also get a high-quality effects loop for integrating your pedalboard and outboard processors — an essential if you want to incorporate Eddie's distinctive pitch-shifting effect into your tonal palette.

Reviews

Fantastic!
I've moved around a lot and have "lost" some gear in the process. I've been rebuilding my collection as I can. I've gone down the road of modelers, solid state, FRFR cabs, etc. I finally put my hands up and wanted to go back to a tube amp where I didn't need a generator to power up a pedal section as well. This amp is fantastic. The clean that comes out of here is great! It responds perfectly with a great set of pickups. (Jazz/JB , HetSet, Dimarzio Pia's)I can get clean to blues. No problem. I engage the overdrive on channel one you can go from AC/DC to early Van Halen. Hit channel Two - Woof!! Metallica, Megadeth. All solid.
Best Amp for the money!
Amazing sound but......not for bedroom practice
So this is my first tube amp. I grew up in the 90's when solos and guitars ruled the world. Now that I am an adult, and frankly, can afford to buy stuff, I decided to finally take the plunge and buy myself a tube amp. I did my homework and research. I'm a huge EVH fan and how can you go wrong with his brand? I went down the rabbit trail of El35 versus 6L6 and all that kind of stuff. And of course, the most important question..Will it chug? It will chug and then some. But it's not your hair metal chug, though. More of a British rock that takes some time to tweak. But here is the real deal from a bona fide buyer and hobby player. If you are not playing live or playing in an environment where volume does not matter, then this is not the amp for you. There is no headphone jack. And a tube amp needs to breathe to sound good. So even putting this on 1/4 power, which is a smart and great feature they added, it still needs to be at least at 3 to get it to sound great. But even at .5 or 1 on the volume knob is loud. So keep this in mind if you decide to buy one of these. I wish it could be my everyday amp but I have kids and neighbors, so it's one of those that only gets to breathe every now and then. The Spark Amp is my main practice and play amp, but I sure love the power and tone of this amp when I get to play it. I'm sure there are ways around this but I am not the gear head I use to be. Hope this is helpful!
Meh
Another cheaper tube amp trying to get the sound of higher priced models and brands. You get what you pay for in most cases and that is certainly true here. I can get workable and usable tones out of it. But to me it is less than inspiring. I have a Blackstar HT Venue MKII, same price range that sounds better. Also a cheaper model tube amp, but it sounds better to me than this EL34 equipped iconic. (The Blackstar also EL34 equipped)
