Waterproof Protection for your Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar!

SKB's 3i-4217-18T hardshell case offers military-strength protection to your prized dreadnought acoustic guitar. Following in the footsteps of SKB's wildly successful MIL-Spec waterproof 3i cases, this portable guitar vault won't just keep out moisture, it'll keep out a flood! The SKB 3i-4217-18T case is made of ultra high-strength polypropylene copolymer resin and built to last. It shrugs off impact, humidity, and changes in pressure. Built-in wheels and a comfortable, snap-down-rubber over molded-cushion-grip handle also make the SKB 3i-4217-18T dreadnought acoustic guitar case easy to transport.

SKB 3i-4217-18T Hardshell Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar Case at a Glance:
  • Reality-proof construction built to withstand the abuses of air travel
  • A perfectly regulated vault for your dreadnought acoustic guitar
  • Convenient comforts onboard
Reality-proof construction built to withstand the abuses of air travel

If you fly often, then you already know how hard air travel can be on your gear. The SKB 3i-4217-18T is the perfect case for protecting your favorite dreadnought acoustic guitar from the hazards of air travel. In addition to being waterproof, the SKB 3i-4217-18T hardshell case is virtually "airproof" too. Its injection molded, high-strength polypropylene copolymer resin shell can shrug off scrapes and bumps like no other hardshell case on the market. What's more, even the best built hardshell guitar case won't travel well, unless it's TSA approved. Fortunately, the SKB 3i-4217-18T also features TSA-approved locking latches so both your guitar and your case will arrive in one piece.

A perfectly regulated vault for your dreadnought acoustic guitar

The SKB 3i-4217-18T's gasketed, waterproof, and airtight seals allow it to maintain its own independent internal pressure. That means even if you're flying, you don't have to worry about the extreme change in altitude affecting your guitar. In fact, the SKB 3i-4217-18T meets the US military's strict regulations for moisture and pressure resistance, even qualifying as waterproof under full immersion. When all of this adds up to is that your acoustic guitar couldn't be safer than it is in a SKB 3i-4217-18T hardshell dreadnought acoustic guitar case.

Convenient comforts onboard

What's great about the SKB 3i-4217-18T is that its practical perks aren't all there is to it. In addition to being a truly elegant acoustic guitar case (worthy of even the highest end acoustic guitars), it also offers significant onboard features that make traveling with your guitar comfortable and easy. Built-in wheels allow you to trail the SKB 3i-4217-18T behind you as you rush from the car to the gig, or the terminal to the gate. The SKB 3i-4217-18T also features extremely comfortable handles, whose cushioned grips feature snap down rubber coverings. Cushioned handles may seem like a small bonus, but when you been lugging around a case for hours, you'll sure be glad you have them!

Reviews

Guild BT240 Baritone Acoustic-Electric Guitar
I love the rich, smooth sound and lower end of a baritone guitar, and the BT240 is just what I was looking for! Great projection unplugged and sound great with my Acoustic A20 amp!

SKB ACOUSTIC GUITAR CASE
If you want to protect your acoustic guitar, this is the case you want!
An absolute tank of protection.

Minnesota Winter-Awesome!
I never do reviews, but this one I could not pass up! I live in Minnesota, which is known for its cold winters, which means low humidity. My favorite acoustic guitar has a light satin finish that has worn off over the years. Because of this, it is extremely susceptible to drying out. I've tried several humidifiers in cases only to be frustrated come November. Ordering this case from Sweetwater was one of the best decisions I could have made. Not only is the case made almost perfect, it retains humidity unlike any case I've ever experienced. The latches are solid, the lining is protective yet beautiful, and I'm glad that it comes in tan rather than standard black. In the summertime, if the guitar sits in my car for an hour, The sun doesn't bake the guitar inside.

Norb at Sweetwater is a fantastic representative, willing to answer questions and ensure that you are completely satisfied with your purchases. Sweetwater is my go-to supplier for all things music! Thanks SKB and thanks Sweetwater (Norb).
Best of all
This case is excellent in so many ways;
It delivers security via the built in TSA capable lockability,
It is Sturdy and makes your guitar secure as hell,
It rolls, so you don't have to worry about it's weight (which is required for the security),
It can take a massive item chucked on top of it without collapsing,
It is a GREAT COLOR (get the Tan- why would you want a BLACK case left in the sun in somebody's shipping area?
Handles are robust and overbuilt,
It holds multitudes of space for gear, winders, mics, cables, iPad, etc. (which ought to be stashed in canvas bags),
It is waterproof which is one of the VERY BEST FEATURES! If you live in arid places like Vegas, say, or anywhere in the winter when the humidity is low, you can add a little humidifier in this case and it will HOLD THE HUMIDITY in the case STABLE. On the other hand, if your next gig is on Leo's yacht moored off St Bart's and the dinghy tips over with all your gear, your guitar will make it aboard safe, sound and dry!
It's rectangular, which is a great thing compared to a form fitted case- how space in a car/van is useful to a form fitted space killing case? How much other gear is NOT RECTANGULAR or SQUARE? The case always fits.
It's ridiculously cheap for the value.
Since I've owned these cases, I've never fretted about getting my guitar into Overhead- I happily put it into baggage and let the monsters just try to damage it. Never once.
This thing is the best!
Music background: Guitar player / singer songwriter
Solid, Rugged, Completely Worth the Price.
I'm often skeptical of companies making claims that their products meet "military standards." However, this case seems to be the real deal. A quick search on the SKB website shows the military spec standards the case allegedly meets.

The case really looks and feels just like the cases used in the military to store and transport weapons, sensitive items, electronics, etc. It is certainly not your typical plastic guitar case that most people are familiar with. The material used on this one is completely different; you can tell right away by simply touching/feeling it. It is very hard and dense. The latches, handles, wheels, etc.; everything looks and feels heavy duty. It is without a doubt an overkill case for regular use, as it is quite heavy. This case is definitely something you want to use for air travel almost exclusively, or for extensive road use.

I got the tan color, which coincidently is actually quite close to the tan color the military uses. Have tested it already on a few flights both domestic and international. I had no fear or concerns. And as expected, the case and guitar survived the flights and baggage handlers quite well. Plus the fact that the case has wheels made it easy going from the parking lots of airports to the terminals.

I bought the case for a Taylor 814 DLX, which has the Grand Auditorium (GA) body size. The guitar fits perfectly. Taylor's GA body shape has very similar dimensions to regular dreadnaught guitars, just a bit narrower on the shoulders. Also, the body depth is very slightly shallower than a traditional square dreadnaught guitar as well. But it doesn't matter because the SKB case is designed to fit most dreadnaught style guitars and accounts for slight variations in sizes. Point is that if you have a Taylor guitar with a GA body shape, it will fit!

It also fits an Emerald X20 carbon fiber guitar. However, the X20 is narrower than standard dreadnaught guitars (even though it is advertised as a dreadnaught). This creates a small gap around the edges between the guitar body and the internal sides of the case. With the X20, you will need to wedge a small piece of foam or cloth to fill a bit of the gap around the edges to prevent the guitar from moving slightly side-to-side. Very easy fix.

Pros:

-Solid, rugged, awesome military tactical look. It really looks incredible if you are into that kind of look.
-Amazing value, completely worth the Price. You get A LOT of case for the money. There are other travel/flight cases out there, like Calton cases and others. But they are also three times the price or more. This SKB case provides the same level of protection as cases that cost over a thousand dollars, but it is cheaper and still USA made.
-Although heavy, it is very easy to transport.

Cons:

-It is heavy.
-There are some slight cosmetic imperfections on the plastic around the edges of the lid. This is something that has come up in various reviews.
- Awful chemical smell inside the case when first opened. The smell filled an entire room. Be prepared to air the case out! It was so bad that I had to leave the case open four a couple of days in a well-ventilated empty room. Guitar cases sometimes have a weird smell, but this one is the worst I've ever experienced. After a couple of days it was all good.
-Airport drama: because the case looks like a rifle case, airline staff may ask you some questions when you are checking in. Also, don't be surprised if airport staff treats the case as a weapons' case and you have to retrieve it in a separate area outside the baggage claim area at your final destination after showing your photo ID (airline policies may vary on this).

Overall, I am extremely happy with this case and am planning to buy a couple more for my other guitars.
