A Step Up for Your Live Performance Bass Rig!

Add another dimension of MIDI-controlled sonics to your band’s sound with the Muse Kinetics 12 Step2 USB MIDI bass pedal foot controller. When both of your hands are tied up on the bass, the 12 Step2 can take the reins and augment your sound. Sweetwater bassists commend Muse Instruments’ shrewd arrangement of this foot controller — its keyboard-like layout allows for intuitive association and ease of use. By tapping a single key, you can trigger single notes, 5-note chords, clips, or even backing tracks. You’ll also have the ability to change parameters like pitch bend and volume to get the ultimate control over your sound. With Legato and Toggle modes, you can hold notes to create pads or backing harmonies. Not to mention, the included 12 Step editor software version 2.0 adds access to 60 included factory presets, 12 Step firmware, tutorials, and software templates!

Massive MIDI capability, lightweight package

This Muse Kinetics MIDI controller pedal seriuosly ups the standard for accessible keyboard controller pedals. With quick and easy control over your musical expression, you can take your live performances to another level. You can connect your 12 Step2 controller via TRS MIDI out, 2 CV outputs, and MIDI over USB-C. Take advantage of the MIDI capabilities of the 12 Step2 by mapping pressure and tilt to MIDI CCs for expressive control over parameters. You can connect the 5-pin MIDI to hardware and synths via TRS MIDI (type A). Or, send pitch and gate CV messages straight to a Eurorack or modular synth set up! Users can add more comprehensive control by plugging in and mapping an expression pedal. The 12 Step2 was also designed for lightweight portability — this 18-inch, 21-ounce controller easily tucks away into a gig bag or backpack.

Reviews

Better than I hoped!
Been playing with this for a few months now. In my band I currently play rhythm guitars and do the programming and synth work (and midi, and sound tech) So, I was looking at options for when we needed basic synths but I had to be on a guitar at the same time.

I didn't want to invest in the "traditional" pedal options. If you don't know what that means, you probably shouldn't buy this.

Then I ran across this.

I've been experimenting with it on thr following

-old Roland 220 and 1080.
-Novation Mininova
-Roland Galaxias software
-plan on trying it on a Roland Aerophone to see if I can simulate bagpipes when playing it.

Conclusions

Pros

1. Very intuitive if you have a basic understanding of keys, midi and synths.
2. The programming engine is more flexible than advertised and easy to learn. I was able to adjust how I wanted chord structures (up to 5 notes simultaneous), what key (especially when transposing), and where I wanted it all on the pedal.
3. 60 patches! Far more than I need, but gives me additional flexibility for saving voicing.
4. Bright! (But dimmable)

Cons

-not a quality issue, but a bit of a learning curve with the "feel" of it because it's not the traditional midi/synth pedal.

For fun, running it to 7 synth sounds at the same time, and mixing it down to a single signal (the 3 above and 4 in Galaxias). Absolutely infinite possibilities and you can lose track of tike in your creativity.

Add that you can midi control whatever you want with your feet, leaving hands open for other instruments, I'm able to fill holes in our sound with ease.

Be sure to get the adapter kit to make full use.

Still learning, but not a penny wasted!
Music background: guitars, keys, woodwind, composition midi, FOH sound engineer.
Latency compromises an innovative product
I've been aware of this product for a good long time and the many ways it can be used to communicate expression with pressure and tilt can be outstanding in performance. However, this does not have the responsiveness a player would expect from a keyboard or a foot controller based on the traditional organ style. So if you're using it for padding the sound, don't expect to be able to play on the beat - too latent. This experience is noticeable when using the direct to midi connection and perhaps more pronounced via USB to host. Not sure if Muse kinetics has any interest in updating the micro processor or whatever is holding this thing back. I think they hoped the market would embrace this product more than it maybe has and doubt that the company as it exists cares to fix the limitation. RIP Keith McMillan, you had great ideas.
Not for me
Was looking for a compact bass pedal option to sync with the Behringer Toro. No luck making any connection with the synth. Returning for a real pedal board.
