Refining Mics with Science: The Shure Nexadyne Story
Shure has never been one to release a microphone willy-nilly. In fact, some of the company’s most enduring mics are built on technology that’s been refined on the frontlines of commercial audio for the past 60 years.
So, for the maker of the legendary SM57, Beta 58A, and KSM8 to announce it was onto something big with the release of its revolutionary Nexadyne microphone series — well, let’s just say our ears perked up.
A Look Inside Nexadyne
Revonic dual-transducer technology improves clarity without EQ
The big news behind Shure Nexadyne mics is the twin moving-coil motors residing inside each housing. Shure calls this its Revonic technology. We call it brilliant. The phase-inverted mic elements are strategically aligned to help tune out the problem frequencies and handling noise that can plague a live vocal performance. The result? Improved clarity and rejection that may have you thinking twice about reaching for the EQ.
How is Nexadyne different from Dualdyne?
Shure’s KSM8 Dualdyne microphones achieve their award-winning transparency by using one active motor and one passive diaphragm. The Nexadyne series with Revonic technology takes things a step further by aligning two complete moving-coil mic motors out of phase — much like a guitar humbucker. These elements are physically coupled to the internal mic housing to reduce unwanted handling noise and feedback in the live environment. What’s more, Shure tunes Nexadyne’s twin active coils to achieve a consistent polar pattern and exceptional top-end detail rivaling certain condenser microphones.
What’s the difference between the Nexadyne 8/C and 8/S?
The “C” and the “S” in each Nexadyne microphone model refer to the polar pattern. The NXN8/C features a natural cardioid microphone response that will be familiar to fans of the classic SM58. The NXN8/S tightens things up with a supercardioid pattern to better isolate sources from surrounding singers and backing musicians.
How can I get my hands on a Nexadyne mic?
If you’re itching to introduce Revonic technology into your live sound or broadcast setup, then there’s good news: Shure Nexadyne products are available as standalone microphones and as mic capsules for all your favorite Shure wireless products.
