Q: I saw yesterday’s Tech Tip about running a delay without an effects loop. But what about an odd use for the effects loop: could I put a volume pedal in an amp’s effects loop and control the amp volume after the preamp distortion is added?
A: It depends on how the loop is implemented. If it is a parallel effects loop, where the amp’s dry signal is running alongside the effected signal, no, this won’t give the results you want. However, if the amp has a serial effects loop (sometimes labeled as preamp out/power amp in) then, yes, it will probably work just fine.
