Variable bit rate (VBR) is a data compression scheme that varies the amount of output data over time, relative to the complexity of the input data. This allows more storage space to be allocated for more complex segments of sound files and less space to be used for less dense segments of data. The average of these rates is calculated to produce an overall average bit rate that will determine the sound quality of the file. VBR produces a better quality-to-space ratio compared to an equivalent constant bit rate (CBR) algorithm.
