Mid-side (also known as “M/S” and “M-S Stereo”) may seem like a complex process, but in truth, it’s not. Mid-side mics offer the greatest control over the stereo image in post production and are also completely mono-compatible. The mid mic element controls the direct sound, while the side mic captures the ambient signal. Mid-side miking can be accomplished using two mics, one cardioid and one mic set to a figure-8 pattern. The cardioid is used in its normal position, while the figure-8 mic (which will be recording the ambience) is placed with its diaphragm at a 90-degree angle to the cardioid.
