Often called a “valve amplifier” in British English, this type of amplifier uses vacuum tubes to increase the amplitude (power) of an audio signal. While tube amps have mostly been displaced by solid-state amps, they are often prized in music application for the musically satisfying harmonics and clipping that they impart to the signal.
