TOSLink Length

Q: How far can I run an optical cable?

A: The technical guidelines for TOSLink (TOShiba Link, also known as “TOSLINK,” “TosLink,” “Tos-Link,” and “TOSlink,” and officially known as the EIAJ optical standard) specify a maximum of 10 meters (33 feet) for reliable use. A “repeater” or signal booster can be used to achieve longer runs, and using good quality cables (glass fiber instead of plastic), it is common to achieve runs longer than 10 meters even without a repeater. Anecdotally, users are said to have used 75′ or 100′ runs without problem.
