“Through-composed” is a translation of the German, durchkomponiert, used to describe songs (Lieder) in which the dramatic content of the poem set to music called for a different melody for each stanza. Through-composed is now used to describe any music that is composed from beginning to end without repetitions of any major section. The term has also widened to mean a composition that has been “fully worked out” (thoroughly composed) as opposed to music that seems episodic or erratic.
