Invented by Fritz Pfleumer in Germany in 1928, recording tape was originally a thin strip of paper coated with magnetic oxide. Modern recording tape consists of a thin plastic strip that has been coated with iron oxide powder. It was first used to store video shortly after World War II, and first used to store computer data in 1951.
