“Symmetrical clipping” clips both positive and negative amplitude peaks of a waveform evenly. This is usually done by using the same number of diodes for each side (positive and negative) of the clipping circuit. Sonically, this is said to result in a smoother, more sustained overdrive than asymmetrical clipping. The Tube Screamer is a classic example of a symmetrically clipping overdrive pedal.
