When a tone (often a sine wave tone) is smoothly varied in frequency from low to high, or vice versa. It’s often referred to as a frequency sweep, or just sweep for short. Sweeps are commonly used to test equipment throughout the range of relevant frequencies. For example, the frequency response of a device is found by running sweeps through it and measuring its output.
