On guitars and basses, many times the strings anchor to the tailpiece of bridge. However, with some guitars and basses, such as the traditional Telecaster, the strings pass over the bridge, then through holes in the body, and are anchored into place using “ferrules” — metal cups inserted into the body that firmly hold the ball end of the string in place.
