Stop Tailpiece

Also known as a “stud tailpiece,” this is fixed to the top of many solidbody guitars and some semi-hollowbodies. It is generally used behind a tune-o-matic bridge, and since it is a big chunk of metal that’s attached via threaded studs and anchors directly to a guitar’s top, it tends to give an instrument an extra bit of sustain. The stop tailpiece was patented by Ted McCarty in the 1950s. See also Stoptail Bridge.
