Single-coil Pickup

A musical instrument (usually guitar or bass) magnetic pickup design that uses only one coil of wire around a magnet. This is in contrast with a dual-coil, or humbucking, pickup design. Both designs are common and each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Single-coil pickups tend to be brighter and thinner sounding, and also have no inherent protection from picking up hum and noise.
