Secure Digital Music Initiative. A working group formed by the RIAA to develop a “voluntary” method for protecting music copyright protection on the Internet. Backed by the major labels, the aim of the SDMI is to simultaneously legitimize the distribution of music, while protecting copyright holders. There is an approximate counterpart in the UK with the name (Government’s) Creative Industries Taskforce (CIT).
