Safety Track to Prevent Clipping

Recording an uber-critical track? Need to ensure beyond a shadow of a doubt that it does not clip? Here’s a trick used by many location/remote recording engineers who only get one shot at capturing a perfect take: record the signal to two tracks. Set one at a level that is appropriate for the signal you are working with. Then, as a safety, route the signal to a second track and pad the level down by 10, 15, or even 20dB.

Now, if the first track, with the healthier level should begin clipping, you will still have the lower-level safety track to work with for a clean signal.
