This refers to the process of electronically approximating a specific sound (most often the sound of an acoustic instrument) by the analysis of its frequency and amplitude characteristics over time, and then using this information to control the operation of a synthesizer. Resynthesis differs substantially from sampling in that no time-coherant digital representation is present within the synthesizer. But rather, the waveform is reconstructed in real time using sophisticated forms of control data. The best, most accurate resynthesis requires significant CPU resources.
