In recording, a pass is one instance of a section of tape going past the heads of a tape machine. It was also known as a tape pass. Some engineers keep track of the number of tape passes, or how much tape has passed by the head stack to gauge when head cleaning and demagnetization must be done. Nowadays the term pass is still used to convey a similar meaning, even though many of the recording technologies we use don’t involve tape.
