From the Italian word meaning literally “obstinate” or “persistent.” An ostinato is typically a series of bass notes which are repeated many times unchanged through a composition, over which many melodic variations occur. A series of notes played by a synthesizer’s arpeggiator over which other parts are added would be considered an ostinato.
