An ensemble of instrumentalists. Though most people tend to think of the term in the sense of a large classical-style philharmonic orchestra with strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion sections led by a conductor, a classical string orchestra, or a smaller classical chamber orchestra, there is no specific instrumentation or musical style strictly associated with the word. There have also been jazz orchestras, rock orchestras, and more with very different instrumentation from classical orchestras.

The word “orchestra” comes from Greek orkeisthai, meaning “to dance.” In ancient Greece, the “orchestra” was a space at the front of a theater or stage where the chorus sang and danced.
