Non-destructive Recording

Non-destructive recording is a method of recording where new takes or tracks are recorded while preserving the previously recorded tracks. The newly recorded tracks have their own file name and location and can be used in lieu of other tracks. For example, in Pro Tools you can record-enable a track that has already been recorded on and, as long as Pro Tools is in non-destructive mode, the original track will be preserved, much like when using virtual tracks.
