Multiple EQs In Series

Another tip garnered from the man himself, acclaimed engineer/producer Frank Filipetti, during his seminar at Sweetwater’s GearFest ’09 on how to mix using the Universal Audio UAD-2 plug-ins. There’s nothing wrong with using more than one equalizer on a track, if that’s what it takes to get the job done. For example, Frank’s lead vocal processing path was:

Vocal – equalizer #1 – compressor – equalizer #2

This allows him to set the general shape of the vocal with the first EQ, then use the second one (after the compressor) to fine tune the timbre and to compensate for any tonal changes that might have resulted from the compression.
