For vacuum tubes, Mu is representative of the equation that defines a tube’s amplification factor. It equals the ratio of the change in plate voltage to a change in control-electrode (typically a grid) voltage in the opposing direction, provided that the plate current remains unchanged and all other electrode voltages are constant. Mu is useful in determining the gain of a particular stage of an amplifier.
