A general term used to describe a positively or negatively charged element involved in the flow of electrons. Typically, a cathode is a negatively charged electrode and an anode is a positively charged electrode. Furthermore, the number of electrodes a device has is indicated by its name: a diode possesses two electrodes; a triode has three electrodes, etc.
